1. Jayamaį¹
galagÄthÄVerses on the Blessings of Success
BÄhuį¹ sahassam-abhinimmitasÄyudhaį¹ taį¹,° MÄra, the terrible one, who had created a thousand arms with weapons,
Girimekhalaį¹ uditaghorasasenamÄraį¹,and had mounted on (the elephant) Girimekhala, with his army,
dÄnÄdidhammavidhinÄ jitavÄ munindo -did the lord of sages defeat by such things as generosity and so forth -
taį¹ tejasÄ bhavatu te jayamaį¹
galÄni!through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!
MÄrÄtirekam-abhiyujjhita sabbarattiį¹,° Even more terrible than MÄra was the impatient and obdurate yakkha Älavaka,
ghoraį¹ panā Älavakam-akkhamathaddhayakkhaį¹,who fought (with the Buddha) throughout the whole night,
khantÄ«sudantavidhinÄ jitavÄ munindo -(him) did the lord of sages defeat by his patience and self-control
taį¹ tejasÄ bhavatu te jayamaį¹
galÄni!through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!
NÄlÄgiriį¹ gajavaraį¹ atimattabhÅ«taį¹,The great elephant NÄlÄgiri, who was completely intoxicated,
dÄvaggicakkam-asanÄ«va sudÄruį¹aį¹ taį¹,fearful, like a jungle fire, a flaming discus, or a flash of lightning,
mettambusekavidhinÄ jitavÄ munindo -did the lord of sages defeat by sprinkling (him) with the waters of friendliness -
taį¹ tejasÄ bhavatu te jayamaį¹
galÄni!through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!
Ukkhittakhaggam-atihatthasudÄruį¹aį¹ taį¹With a sword that was lifted high in his outstretched hand, that very fearsome (bandit)
dhÄvaį¹ tiyojanapathaį¹
gulimÄlavantaį¹:the one with a finger necklace (Aį¹
gulimÄla) ran for (the whole of) three leagues up the path:
iddhÄ«bhisaį¹
khatamano jitavÄ munindo -(him) did the lord of sages defeat with the psychic powers created in his mind -
taį¹ tejasÄ bhavatu te jayamaį¹
galÄni!through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!
KatvÄna kaį¹į¹ham-udaraį¹ iva gabbhinÄ«yÄ,Having made her midriff (look large) with a piece of wood, like one who is pregnant,
CiƱcÄya duį¹į¹havacanaį¹ janakÄyamajjhe:CiƱcÄ (then spoke) wicked words in the midst of a group of people:
santena somavidhinÄ jitavÄ munindo -(her) did the lord of sages defeat by means of his gentleness and peacefulness -
taį¹ tejasÄ bhavatu te jayamaį¹
galÄni!through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!
Saccaį¹ vihÄya mati-SaccakavÄdaketuį¹,The arrogant Saccaka, who had given up the truth, and had challenged (the Buddha) to a debate,
vÄdÄbhiropitamanaį¹ ati-andhabhÅ«taį¹,with his mind fixed on his argument, completely blind to the truth,
paƱƱÄpadÄ«pajalito jitavÄ munindo -(him) did the lord of sages defeat with the shining lamp of true wisdom -
taį¹ tejasÄ bhavatu te jayamaį¹
galÄni!through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!
Nandopanandabhujagaį¹ vibudhaį¹ mahiddhiį¹,° Taming the wise dragon Nandopananda, who had great power,
puttena therabhujagena damÄpayanto,by way of his son (MoggallÄna), who was a dragon of an elder,
iddhÅ«padesavidhinÄ jitavÄ munindo -(thus) did the lord of sages defeat (him) by instructing (his son to use) psychic power -
taį¹ tejasÄ bhavatu te jayamaį¹
galÄni!through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!
DuggÄhadiį¹į¹hibhujagena sudaį¹į¹hahatthaį¹,He whose hand was badly bitten by the serpent of wrongly taken up views,
brahmaį¹ visuddhijutim-iddhi-BakÄbhidhÄnaį¹,the brahma Baka, who was clear and bright, and who possessed psychic powers,
ƱÄį¹Ägadena vidhinÄ jitavÄ munindo -did the lord of sages defeat with the medicine of his super-knowledge -
taį¹ tejasÄ bhavatu te jayamaį¹
galÄni!through that resplendent power may you have the blessings of success!
EtÄ pi Buddhajayamaį¹
gala-aį¹į¹hagÄthÄ,° He who recites these eight verses each and every day,
yo vÄcako dinadine sarate-m-atandÄ«,which are about the Buddhaās (many) blessed successes, and remembers them with diligence,
hitvÄnanekavividhÄni cupaddavÄni,after giving up (all) the many and various kinds of adversity,
mokkhaṠsukhaṠadhigameyya naro sapañño.that wise man will (soon thereafter) attain both freedom and happiness.
