3. MahāmaṅgalasuttaṁThe Discourse on the Great Blessings

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—Thus I have heard:I have heard thatSo I have heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme. at one time the Fortunate One was dwelling near Sāvatthī at Anāthapiṇḍika’s grounds in Jeta’s Wood. on one occasion the Blessed One was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.

Atha kho aññatarā devatā abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇā kevalakappaṁ jetavanaṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aṭṭhāsi. Then a certain god, towards the end of the night, whose surpassing beauty lit up the whole of Jeta’s Wood, approached the Fortunate One, and after approaching and worshipping the Fortunate One, he stood on one side.Then a certain deva, in the far extreme of the night, her extreme radiance lighting up the entirety of Jeta’s Grove, went to the Blessed One. On arrival, having bowed down to him, she stood to one side.Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire Jeta’s Grove, went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side.

Ekamantaṁ ṭhitā kho sā devatā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: While standing on one side that god addressed the Fortunate One with a verse:As she was standing there, she addressed him with a verse:That deity addressed the Buddha in verse:

“Bahū devā manussā ca, “Many are the gods and the men“Many devas & human beings“Many gods and humans

maṅgalāni acintayuṁ; who have thought about the blessingsgive thought to protection,have thought about blessings

Ākaṅkhamānā sotthānaṁ, hoping for safety:desiring well-being.desiring well-being:

brūhi maṅgalamuttamaṁ”. now please say what is the supreme blessing.”Tell, then, the highest protection.”declare the highest blessing.”

“Asevanā ca bālānaṁ, “Not associating with fools,“Not consorting with fools,“Not to fraternize with fools,

paṇḍitānañca sevanā; but associating with the wise,consorting with the wise,but to fraternize with the wise,

Pūjā ca pūjaneyyānaṁ, honouring those worthy of honour:paying homage to those worthy of homage:and honoring those worthy of honor:

etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Patirūpadesavāso ca, Living in a suitable place,Living in a civilized land,Living in a suitable region,

pubbe ca katapuññatā; formerly having done good deeds,having made merit in the past,having made merit in the past,

Attasammāpaṇidhi ca, aspiring in a right way oneself:directing oneself rightly1:being rightly resolved in oneself,

etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Bāhusaccañca sippañca, Having great learning and craft,Broad knowledge, skill,Education and a craft,

vinayo ca susikkhito; and being disciplined and well trained,well-mastered discipline,discipline and training,

Subhāsitā ca yā vācā, and whatever words are well spoken:well-spoken words:and well-spoken speech:

etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Mātāpitu upaṭṭhānaṁ, Attendance on one's mother and father,Support for one’s mother & father,2Caring for mother and father,

puttadārassa saṅgaho; looking after one’s wife and children,assistance to one’s wife and children,kindness to children and partners,

Anākulā ca kammantā, with works that are not agitating:consistency in one’s work:and unstressful work:

etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Dānañca dhammacariyā ca, Giving, and living by the Dhamma,Generosity, living in rectitude,Giving and righteous conduct,

ñātakānañca saṅgaho; and looking after one’s relatives,assistance to one’s relatives,kindness to relatives,

Anavajjāni kammāni, (performing) actions that are blameless:deeds that are blameless:blameless deeds:

etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Āratī viratī pāpā, Abstinence, avoidance of bad deeds,Avoiding, abstaining from evil;Desisting and abstaining from evil,

majjapānā ca saṁyamo; restraint from intoxicating drink,refraining from intoxicants,avoiding drinking liquor,

Appamādo ca dhammesu, being heedful regarding (all) things:being heedful of mental qualities:diligence in good qualities:

etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Gāravo ca nivāto ca, Having respect, being humble,Respect, humility,Respect and placidity,

santuṭṭhi ca kataññutā; being satisfied and grateful,contentment, gratitude,contentment and gratitude,

Kālena dhammassavanaṁ, listening to Dhamma at the right time:hearing the Dhamma on timely occasions:and timely listening to the teaching:

etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Khantī ca sovacassatā, Being patient and easily spoken to,Patience, being easy to instruct,Patience, being easy to admonish,

samaṇānañca dassanaṁ; seeing ascetics,seeing contemplatives,the sight of ascetics,

Kālena dhammasākacchā, discussing Dhamma at the right time:discussing the Dhamma on timely occasions:and timely discussion of the teaching:

etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Tapo ca brahmacariyañca, Austere, living spiritually,Austerity, celibacy,Fervor and chastity

Ariyasaccāna dassanaṁ; insight into the noble truths,seeing the noble truths,seeing the noble truths,

Nibbānasacchikiriyā ca, the experience of Nibbāna:realizing unbinding:and realization of extinguishment:

Etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Phuṭṭhassa lokadhammehi, He whose mind does not waver,When touched by the ways of the world,3Though touched by worldly conditions,

Cittaṁ yassa na kampati; when it is touched by things of this world,a mind that is unshaken,their mind does not tremble;

Asokaṁ virajaṁ khemaṁ, (being) griefless, dustless, and secure:sorrowless, dustless, at rest:sorrowless, stainless, secure:

Etaṁ maṅgalamuttamaṁ. this is the supreme blessing.This is the highest protection.this is the highest blessing.

Etādisāni katvāna, Having done as here directed,When acting in this way,Having completed these things,

Sabbattha maparājitā; they are undefeated everywhere,everywhere undefeated,undefeated everywhere;

Sabbattha sotthiṁ gacchanti, they go everywhere in safety:people go everywhere in well-being:everywhere they go in safety:

Taṁ tesaṁ maṅgalamuttaman”ti. for them this is the supreme blessing.”This is their highest protection.”this is their highest blessing.”

Maṅgalasuttaṁ catutthaṁ. The Maṅgala Sutta, the fourth.
