19. MahācundattherabojjhaṅgaṁThe Factor of Awakening Concerning the Elder Mahā Cunda
Introductory Verse
Bhagavā lokanāthoyaṁ, Cundattherassa santikā° The Fortunate One, lord of the world, having heard this (safeguard)
sutvā tasmiṁ khaṇe yeva ahosi nirupaddavo.from the elder Cunda, at that moment became free from adversity.
Bojjhaṅgabalasaṁyuttaṁ, parittaṁ taṁ bhaṇāmahe.It is about the strength of the factors of Awakening, we will recite that safeguard.
The Safeguard
Evaṁ me sutaṁ:Thus I have heard:
ekaṁ samayaṁ Bhagavā Rājagahe viharatiat one time the Fortunate One was dwelling near Rājagaha

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā ābādhiko hoti dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Then at that time the Fortunate One was afflicted, suffering, and very sick.Now at that time he was sick, suffering, gravely ill.
Atha kho āyasmā mahācundo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinnaṁ kho āyasmantaṁ mahācundaṁ bhagavā etadavoca: Then venerable Mahā Cunda, rising from seclusion in the evening time, approached the Fortunate One, and after approaching and worshipping the Fortunate One, he sat down on one side. While he was sitting on one side the Fortunate One said this to venerable Mahā Cunda:Then Venerable Mahācunda went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“paṭibhantu taṁ, cunda, bojjhaṅgā”ti. “May the factors of Awakening occur to you, Cunda.”“Cunda, express your understanding of the awakening factors.”
“Sattime, bhante, bojjhaṅgā bhagavatā sammadakkhātā bhāvitā bahulīkatā abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattanti. “There are these seven factors of Awakening, reverend Sir, that have been fully explained by the Fortunate One, when developed and made much of they lead to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.“Sir, the Buddha has rightly explained these seven awakening factors. When developed and cultivated, they lead to direct knowledge, to awakening, and to extinguishment.

Satisambojjhaṅgo kho bhante Bhagavatā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is mindfulness, reverend Sir, has been fully explained by the Fortunate One,
bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.
Dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo kho bhante Bhagavatā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is investigation of (the nature of) things, reverend Sir, has been fully explained by the Fortunate One,
bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.
Viriyasambojjhaṅgo kho bhante Bhagavatā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is energy, reverend Sir, has been fully explained by the Fortunate One,
bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.
Pītisambojjhaṅgo kho bhante Bhagavatā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is rapture, reverend Sir, has been fully explained by the Fortunate One,
bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.
Passaddhisambojjhaṅgo kho bhante Bhagavatā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is calm, reverend Sir, has been fully explained by the Fortunate One,
bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.
Samādhisambojjhaṅgo kho bhante Bhagavatā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is concentration, reverend Sir, has been fully explained by the Fortunate One,
bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.
Upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo kho bhante Bhagavatā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is equanimity, reverend Sir, has been fully explained by the Fortunate One,
bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.
Ime kho, bhante, satta bojjhaṅgā bhagavatā sammadakkhātā bhāvitā bahulīkatā abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattantī”ti. These are the seven factors of Awakening, reverend Sir, which have been fully explained by the Fortunate One, when developed and made much of they lead to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.”These are the seven awakening factors that the Buddha has rightly explained. When developed and cultivated, they lead to direct knowledge, to awakening, and to extinguishment.”
“Taggha, cunda, bojjhaṅgā; “Surely, Cunda, (these are) the factors of Awakening!“Indeed, Cunda, these are awakening factors!
taggha, cunda, bojjhaṅgā”ti. Surely, Cunda, (these are) the factors of Awakening!”Indeed, Cunda, these are awakening factors!”
Idamavocāyasmā cundo. Venerable Mahā Cunda said this,That is what Cunda said,
Samanuñño satthā ahosi. and the Teacher was in agreement,and the Teacher concurred.
Vuṭṭhahi ca bhagavā tamhā ābādhā. and the Fortunate One recovered from that affliction,And that’s how the Buddha recovered from that illness.
Tathāpahīno ca bhagavato so ābādho ahosīti. and by that the Fortunate One’s affliction was brought to an end.
