17. MahākassapattherabojjhaṅgaṁThe Factor of Awakening Concerning the Elder Mahā Kassapa

Introductory Verse

Yaṁ Mahākassapatthero, parittaṁ Munisantikā° The elder Mahā Kassapa, having heard that safeguard

sutvā tasmiṁ khaṇe yeva ahosi nirupaddavo.from the Sage, at that moment became free from adversity.

Bojjhaṅgabalasaṁyuttaṁ, parittaṁ taṁ bhaṇāmahe.It is about the strength of the factors of Awakening, we will recite that safeguard.

The Safeguard

Evaṁ me sutaṁ:Thus I have heard:

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati veḷuvane kalandakanivāpe. at one time the Fortunate One was dwelling near Rājagaha at the Squirrels’ Feeding Place in Bamboo Wood.At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha in the Bamboo Grove, the squirrels’ feeding ground.

Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā mahākassapo pippaliguhāyaṁ viharati ābādhiko dukkhito bāḷhagilāno. Then at that time venerable Mahā Kassapa was dwelling at the Pepper Cave, and was afflicted, suffering, and very sick.Now at that time Venerable Mahākassapa was staying in the Pipphali cave, and he was sick, suffering, gravely ill.

Atha kho bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenāyasmā mahākassapo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Nisajja kho bhagavā āyasmantaṁ mahākassapaṁ etadavoca: Then the Fortunate One, rising from seclusion in the evening time, approached venerable Mahā Kassapa, and after approaching he sat down on the prepared seat. Having sat down the Fortunate One said this to venerable Mahā Kassapa:Then in the late afternoon, the Buddha came out of retreat, went to Venerable Mahākassapa, sat down on the seat spread out, and said to him:

“Kacci te, kassapa, khamanīyaṁ kacci yāpanīyaṁ? Kacci dukkhā vedanā paṭikkamanti, no abhikkamanti; paṭikkamosānaṁ paññāyati, no abhikkamo”ti? “Can you bear up, Kassapa? Can you carry on? Do painful feelings decrease and not increase? Is it known that they are decreasing and not increasing?”“I hope you’re keeping well, Kassapa, I hope you’re all right. I hope your pain is fading, not growing; that its fading is evident, not its growing.”

“Na me, bhante, khamanīyaṁ, na yāpanīyaṁ. Bāḷhā me dukkhā vedanā abhikkamanti, no paṭikkamanti; abhikkamosānaṁ paññāyati, no paṭikkamo”ti. “No, reverend Sir, I cannot bear up, nor can I carry on, painful feelings greatly increase for me and do not decrease, and it is known that they increase and do not decrease.”“Sir, I’m not keeping well, I’m not getting by. My pain is terrible and growing, not fading; its growing is evident, not its fading.”

“Sattime, kassapa, bojjhaṅgā mayā sammadakkhātā bhāvitā bahulīkatā abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattanti. “There are these seven factors of Awakening, Kassapa, that have been fully explained by me, when developed and made much of they lead to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.“Kassapa, I’ve rightly explained these seven awakening factors. When developed and cultivated, they lead to direct knowledge, to awakening, and to extinguishment.

Katame satta? What are the seven?What seven?

Satisambojjhaṅgo kho Kassapa mayā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is mindfulness, Kassapa, has been fully explained by me,

bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.

Dhammavicayasambojjhaṅgo kho Kassapa mayā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is investigation of (the nature of) things, Kassapa, has been fully explained by me,

bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.

Viriyasambojjhaṅgo kho Kassapa mayā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is energy, Kassapa, has been fully explained by me,

bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.

Pītisambojjhaṅgo kho Kassapa mayā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is rapture, Kassapa, has been fully explained by me,

bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.

Passaddhisambojjhaṅgo kho Kassapa mayā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is calm, Kassapa, has been fully explained by me,

bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.

Samādhisambojjhaṅgo kho Kassapa mayā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is concentration, Kassapa, has been fully explained by me,

bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.

Upekkhāsambojjhaṅgo kho Kassapa mayā sammad-akkhāto,The factor of Complete Awakening that is equanimity, Kassapa, has been fully explained by me,

bhāvito bahulīkato abhiññāya Sambodhāya Nibbānāya saṁvattati.when developed and made much of it leads to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.

Ime kho, kassapa, satta bojjhaṅgā mayā sammadakkhātā bhāvitā bahulīkatā abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattantī”ti. These are the seven factors of Awakening, Kassapa, which have been fully explained by me, when developed and made much of they lead to deep knowledge, Complete Awakening, and Nibbāna.”These are the seven awakening factors that I’ve rightly explained. When developed and cultivated, they lead to direct knowledge, to awakening, and to extinguishment.”

“Taggha, bhagavā, bojjhaṅgā; “Surely, Fortunate One, (these are) the factors of Awakening!“Indeed, Blessed One, these are awakening factors!

taggha, sugata, bojjhaṅgā”ti. Surely, Happy One, (these are) the factors of Awakening!”Indeed, Holy One, these are awakening factors!”

Idamavoca bhagavā. The Fortunate One said this,That is what the Buddha said.

Attamano āyasmā mahākassapo bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandi. and venerable Mahā Kassapa was uplifted and greatly rejoiced in what was said by the Fortunate One,Satisfied, Venerable Mahākassapa approved what the Buddha said.

Vuṭṭhahi cāyasmā mahākassapo tamhā ābādhā. and venerable Mahā Kassapa recovered from that affliction,And that’s how he recovered from that illness.

Tathāpahīno cāyasmato mahākassapassa so ābādho ahosīti. and by that venerable Mahā Kassapa’s affliction was brought to an end.
