13. MoraparittaṁThe Peacock’s Safeguard

Introductory Verses

PÅ«rento Bodhisambhāre nibbatto morayoninaṁ.While fulfilling the conditions for Awakening he was born from a peahen’s womb.

Yena saṁvihitārakkhaṁ Mahāsattaṁ vane carāAs the Great Being was protected with (a safeguard) the forest dwellers

cirassaṁ vāyamantā pi, neva sakkhiṁsu gaṇhituṁ.were unable to catch him, though they endeavoured for a long time.

ā€œBrahmamantanā€-ti akkhātaṁ, parittaṁ taṁ bhaṇāmahe.It is declared to be ā€œBrahma’s Charmā€, we will recite that safeguard.

The Safeguard

ā€œUdetayaƱ cakkhumā ekarājā, ā€œThat One who gives Vision, the sole king, comes up,This Clear-eyed One arises, the One King,

Harissavaṇṇo pathavippabhāso; he is golden coloured, he enlightens the earth,palomino-colored, shining over the earth.

Taṁ taṁ namassāmi harissavaṇṇaṁ pathavippabhāsaṁ, therefore I revere the golden coloured one, who enlightens the earth,I bow especially to you, palomino-colored, shining over the earth:

Tayājja guttā viharemu divasaṁ. guarded by you today, we will live out the day.guarded by you let us live out this day.

Ye brāhmaṇā vedagÅ« sabbadhamme, ° I revere those brahmins who have true understandingThose brahmins who are knowledge-masters with respect to all things,

Te me namo te ca maṁ pālayantu; of all things - may they keep watch over me!I worship them, may they keep me safe.

Namatthu buddhānaṁ namatthu bodhiyā, Revere the Buddhas! Revere Awakening!Hail the Awakened Ones, hail Awakening!

Namo vimuttānaṁ namo vimuttiyā; Reverence to the Free! Reverence to Freedom!ā€Homage to the freed ones, homage to freedom!

Imaṁ so parittaṁ katvā, After making this safeguardHaving made this protection,

Moro carati esanā. the peacock roams about seeking (for food).the peacock wanders seeking.

Apetayaṁ cakkhumā ekarājā, ā€œThat One who gives Vision, the sole king, goes down,This Clear-eyed One sets, the One King,

Harissavaṇṇo pathavippabhāso; he is golden coloured, he enlightens the earth,palomino-colored, shining over the earth.
