13. Moraparittaį¹The Peacockās Safeguard
Introductory Verses
PÅ«rento BodhisambhÄre nibbatto morayoninaį¹.While fulfilling the conditions for Awakening he was born from a peahenās womb.
Yena saį¹vihitÄrakkhaį¹ MahÄsattaį¹ vane carÄAs the Great Being was protected with (a safeguard) the forest dwellers
cirassaį¹ vÄyamantÄ pi, neva sakkhiį¹su gaį¹hituį¹.were unable to catch him, though they endeavoured for a long time.
āBrahmamantanā-ti akkhÄtaį¹, parittaį¹ taį¹ bhaį¹Ämahe.It is declared to be āBrahmaās Charmā, we will recite that safeguard.
The Safeguard
āUdetayaƱ cakkhumÄ ekarÄjÄ, āThat One who gives Vision, the sole king, comes up,This Clear-eyed One arises, the One King,
Harissavaį¹į¹o pathavippabhÄso; he is golden coloured, he enlightens the earth,palomino-colored, shining over the earth.
Taį¹ taį¹ namassÄmi harissavaį¹į¹aį¹ pathavippabhÄsaį¹, therefore I revere the golden coloured one, who enlightens the earth,I bow especially to you, palomino-colored, shining over the earth:
TayÄjja guttÄ viharemu divasaį¹. guarded by you today, we will live out the day.guarded by you let us live out this day.
Ye brÄhmaį¹Ä vedagÅ« sabbadhamme, ° I revere those brahmins who have true understandingThose brahmins who are knowledge-masters with respect to all things,
Te me namo te ca maį¹ pÄlayantu; of all things - may they keep watch over me!I worship them, may they keep me safe.
Namatthu buddhÄnaį¹ namatthu bodhiyÄ, Revere the Buddhas! Revere Awakening!Hail the Awakened Ones, hail Awakening!
Namo vimuttÄnaį¹ namo vimuttiyÄ; Reverence to the Free! Reverence to Freedom!āHomage to the freed ones, homage to freedom!
Imaį¹ so parittaį¹ katvÄ, After making this safeguardHaving made this protection,
Moro carati esanÄ. the peacock roams about seeking (for food).the peacock wanders seeking.
