12. MittānisaṁsaṁThe Advantages of Friendship
Introductory Verse
Pūrento Bodhisambhāre Nātho TemiyajātiyaṁWhile fulfilling the conditions for Awakening the Lord, in his birth as Temiya,
mittānisaṁsaṁ yaṁ āha Sunandaṁ nāma sārathiṁ.spoke on the advantages of friendship to his charioteer named Sunanda.
Sabbalokahitatthāya parittaṁ taṁ bhaṇāmahe.For the whole world’s welfare and benefit we will recite that safeguard.
The Safeguard
Pahūtabhakkho bhavati, He has an abundance of food
vippavuttho sakaṁ gharā; (even) when away from his home,
Bahū naṁ upajīvanti, many live depending on him,
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati. he who does no wrong to his friends.
Yaṁ yaṁ janapadaṁ yāti, Whatever country he goes to,
nigame rājadhāniyo; in a town or a king’s capital,
Sabbattha pūjito hoti, everywhere (he goes) he is honoured,
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati. he who does no wrong to his friends.
Nāssa corā pasāhanti, Thieves do not overpower him,
nātimaññanti khattiyā; nobles do not despise him,
Sabbe amitte tarati, he overcomes all enemies,
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati. he who does no wrong to his friends.
Akkuddho sagharaṁ eti, without anger he comes to his home,
sabhāyaṁ paṭinandito; he is welcome in public halls,
Ñātīnaṁ uttamo hoti, he is the best of relatives,
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati. he who does no wrong to his friends.
Sakkatvā sakkato hoti, After greeting, he is greeted,
garu hoti sagāravo; respectable, he is respected,
Vaṇṇakittibhato hoti, he enjoys splendour and renown,
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati. he who does no wrong to his friends.
Pūjako labhate pūjaṁ, Honourable, he receives honour,
vandako paṭivandanaṁ; worshipful, he is worshipped,
Yaso kittiñca pappoti, he acquires repute and renown,
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati. he who does no wrong to his friends.
Aggi yathā pajjalati, Just like a fire he shines forth,
devatāva virocati; he is as brilliant as a god,
Siriyā ajahito hoti, he is not abandoned by good luck,
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati. he who does no wrong to his friends.
Gāvo tassa pajāyanti, His cows are productive for him,
khette vuttaṁ virūhati; what is sown in his fields grows up,
Vuttānaṁ phalamasnāti, he enjoys the boon of children,
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati. he who does no wrong to his friends.
Darito pabbatāto vā, Whether that man has fallen from a cleft, a mountain,
rukkhato patito naro; or a tree,
Cuto patiṭṭhaṁ labhati, while falling, he receives support,
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati. he who does no wrong to his friends.
Virūḷhamūlasantānaṁ, As the wind (cannot overpower)
nigrodhamiva māluto; a banyan tree which has roots well grown,
Amittā nappasāhanti, (so) enemies cannot overpower
yo mittānaṁ na dubbhati”. he who does no wrong to his friends.”
