8. RatanasuttaṁThe Discourse on the Treasures

Introductory Verses

Koṭisatasahassesu cakkavāḷesu devatāThe gods in the ten hundred thousand million universes

yassāṇaṁ patigaṇhanti yañ-ca Vesāliyaṁ pure,accepted that order (given) in the city of Vesāli,

rogāmanussadubbhikkha sambhūtaṁ tividhaṁ bhayaṁ -and disease, non-human beings, and famine the threefold fear that had arisen -

khippam-antaradhāpesi, parittaṁ taṁ bhaṇāmahe.was quickly brought to an end, we will recite that safeguard.

The Safeguard

Yānīdha bhūtāni samāgatāni, Whatever beings have come together here,Whatever spirits have gathered here,Whatever beings have gathered here,

Bhummāni vā yāni va antalikkhe; whether of the earth or in the firmament,—on the earth, in the sky—on the ground or in the sky:

Sabbeva bhūtā sumanā bhavantu, may the minds of all those beings be happy,may you all be happymay beings all be of happy heart,

Athopi sakkacca suṇantu bhāsitaṁ. and may they listen carefully to what is said.& listen intently to what I say.and listen carefully to what is said.

Tasmā hi bhūtā nisāmetha sabbe, Therefore, all of you beings, be attentive,Thus, spirits, you should all be attentive.So pay heed, all you beings,

Mettaṁ karotha mānusiyā pajāya; be friendly towards this generation of men,Show goodwill to the human race.have love for humankind,

Divā ca ratto ca haranti ye baliṁ, they who bring offerings by day and by night,Day & night they bring offerings,who day and night bring offerings;

Tasmā hi ne rakkhatha appamattā. therefore, being heedful, you must protect them.so, being heedful, protect them.please protect them diligently.

Yaṁ kiñci vittaṁ idha vā huraṁ vā, Whatever riches there are - here or elsewhereWhatever wealth—here or beyond—There’s no wealth in this life or the next,

Saggesu vā yaṁ ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ; or in the heavens - that excellent treasurewhatever exquisite treasure in the heavens,no sublime gem in the heavens,

Na no samaṁ atthi tathāgatena, is not equal unto the Realised One,does not, for us, equal the Tathāgata.that equals the Realized One.

Idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ; this excellent treasure is in the Buddha:This, too, is an exquisite treasure in the Buddha.This sublime gem is in the Buddha:

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu. by virtue of this truth may there be safety!By this truth may there be well-being.by this truth, may you be well!

Khayaṁ virāgaṁ amataṁ paṇītaṁ, (Pollutants') end, dispassion, deathlessness, excellence:The exquisite deathless—ending, dispassion—Ending, dispassion, the undying, the sublime,

Yadajjhagā sakyamunī samāhito; which the concentrated Sakyan sage attained,discovered by the Sakyan Sage in concentration:attained by the Sakyan Sage immersed in samādhi;

Na tena dhammena samatthi kiñci, there is nothing that is equal to that state,There is nothing to equal that Dhamma.there is nothing equal to that Dhamma.

Idampi dhamme ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ; this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma:This, too, is an exquisite treasure in the Dhamma.This sublime gem is in the Dhamma:

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu. by virtue of this truth may there be safety!By this truth may there be well-being.by this truth, may you be well!

Yaṁ buddhaseṭṭho parivaṇṇayī suciṁ, That which the Buddha, the Great One, praised as pure,What the excellent Awakened One extolled as pureThe purity praised by the highest Buddha

Samādhimānantarikaññamāhu; the concentration said to have prompt (result),and called the concentration of unmediated knowing1:is said to be the “immersion with immediate fruit”;

Samādhinā tena samo na vijjati, no equal to that concentration is found,No equal to that concentration can be found.no equal to that immersion is found.

Idampi dhamme ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ; this excellent treasure is in the Dhamma:This, too, is an exquisite treasure in the Dhamma.This sublime gem is in the Dhamma:

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu. by virtue of this truth may there be safety!By this truth may there be well-being.by this truth, may you be well!

Ye puggalā aṭṭha sataṁ pasatthā, Those eight individuals praised by the good,The eight persons, praised by those at peace—The eight individual persons praised by the good

Cattāri etāni yugāni honti; there are these four pairs (of individuals),these are the four pairs:are the four pairs of the Holy One’s disciples;

Te dakkhiṇeyyā sugatassa sāvakā, those disciples of the Happy One are worthy of gifts,They, disciples of the One Well-Gone, deserve offerings.they are worthy of religious donations,

Etesu dinnāni mahapphalāni; those things that have been given to them have great fruits,What is given to them bears great fruit.what’s given to them is very fruitful.

Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, this excellent treasure is in the Saṅgha:This, too, is an exquisite treasure in the Saṅgha.This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha:

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu. by virtue of this truth may there be safety!By this truth may there be well-being.by this truth, may you be well!

Ye suppayuttā manasā daḷhena, Those who have firm and devoted minds,Those who, devoted, firm-minded,Dedicated to Gotama’s dispensation,

Nikkāmino gotamasāsanamhi; without sense desire in Gotama's dispensation,apply themselves to Gotama’s message,strong-minded, free of sense desire,

Te pattipattā amataṁ vigayha, those who have attained, and entered the deathless,on attaining their goal, plunge into the deathless,they’ve attained the goal, plunged into freedom from death,

Laddhā mudhā nibbutiṁ bhuñjamānā; are enjoying emancipation, gained for free,freely enjoying the liberation they’ve gained.and enjoy the quenching they’ve freely gained.

Yathindakhīlo pathavissito siyā, Just as a locking post stuck fast in the earthAn Indra pillar,2 planted in the earth,As Indra’s pillar rooted in earth

Catubbhi vātehi asampakampiyo; does not waver on account of the four winds,that even the four winds cannot shake:is not shaken by the four winds,

Tathūpamaṁ sappurisaṁ vadāmi, in the same way, I say, is the true person,That, I tell you, is like the person of integrity,I say a true person is like this,

Yo ariyasaccāni avecca passati; the one who sees the noble truths completely,who—having comprehended the noble truths—sees.who sees the noble truths in experience.

Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, this excellent treasure is in the Saṅgha:This, too, is an exquisite treasure in the Saṅgha.This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha:

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu. by virtue of this truth may there be safety!By this truth may there be well-being.by this truth, may you be well!

Ye ariyasaccāni vibhāvayanti, Those who clearly distinguish the noble truths,Those who have seen clearly the noble truthsThose who fathom the noble truths

Gambhīrapaññena sudesitāni; which were well preached by the one with deep wisdom,well-taught by the one deeply discerning—taught by the one of deep wisdom,

Kiñcāpi te honti bhusaṁ pamattā, however great they become in heedlessnessregardless of what [later] might make them heedless—do not take an eighth life,

Na te bhavaṁ aṭṭhamamādiyanti; still they do not take up an eighth existence,will come to no eighth state of becoming,3even if they are hugely negligent.

Sahāvassa dassanasampadāya, With his attainment of (liberating) insightAt the moment of attaining sight,When they attain to vision

Tayassu dhammā jahitā bhavanti; there are a triad of things that are given up:one abandons three things:they give up three things:

Sakkāyadiṭṭhī vicikicchitañca, embodiment view, uncertainty,identity-views, uncertainty,substantialist view, doubt, and any

Sīlabbataṁ vāpi yadatthi kiñci. and whatever (grasping at) virtue and practices there is.& any attachment to habits & practices.4attachment to precepts and observances.

Catūhapāyehi ca vippamutto, He is free from (rebirth in) the four lower worlds,One is completely released from the four states of deprivation,5They’re freed from the four places of loss,

Chaccābhiṭhānāni abhabba kātuṁ; he is incapable of the six great crimes.and incapable of committing the six great wrongs.6and cannot do six things.

Idampi saṅghe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, this excellent treasure is in the Saṅgha:This, too, is an exquisite treasure in the Saṅgha.This sublime gem is in the Saṅgha:

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu. by virtue of this truth may there be safety!By this truth may there be well-being.by this truth, may you be well!

Kiñcāpi so kamma karoti pāpakaṁ, Whatever bad action there is that he performsWhatever bad deed one may doEven if they do a bad deed

Kāyena vācā uda cetasā vā; by way of body, or of speech, or of mind,—in body, speech, or in mind—by body, speech, or mind,

Abhabba so tassa paṭicchadāya, he is incapable of covering it up,one cannot hide it:they are unable to conceal it;

Abhabbatā diṭṭhapadassa vuttā; this incapacity is said of one who has seen the state (of peace),an incapability ascribed to one who has seen the Way.this, it’s said, is the inability of one who has seen the truth.

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu. by virtue of this truth may there be safety!By this truth may there be well-being.by this truth, may you be well!

Vanappagumbe yatha phussitagge, Just like a tall woodland tree crowned with blossomLike a forest grove with flowering topsLike a tall forest tree crowned with flowers

Gimhānamāse paṭhamasmiṁ gimhe; in the summer months, in the early summer,in the first month of the heat of the summer,in the first month of summer;

Tathūpamaṁ dhammavaraṁ adesayi, in the same way he preached the Dhamma which is best,so is the foremost Dhamma he taught,that’s how he taught the superb Dhamma,

Nibbānagāmiṁ paramaṁ hitāya; which goes to Nibbāna, the highest benefit,for the highest benefit, leading to unbinding.leading to extinguishment, the ultimate benefit.

Idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, this excellent treasure is in the Buddha:This, too, is an exquisite treasure in the Buddha.This sublime gem is in the Buddha:

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu. by virtue of this truth may there be safety!By this truth may there be well-being.by this truth, may you be well!

Varo varaññū varado varāharo, The best one, knowing the best, giving the best, brought the best,Foremost, foremost-knowing, foremost-giving, foremost-bringing,The superb, knower of the superb, giver of the superb, bringer of the superb;

Anuttaro dhammavaraṁ adesayi; brought the best, unsurpassed he preached the best Dhamma.unsurpassed, he taught the foremost Dhamma.taught the superb Dhamma supreme.

Idampi buddhe ratanaṁ paṇītaṁ, this excellent treasure is in the Buddha:This, too, is an exquisite treasure in the Buddha.This sublime gem is in the Buddha:

Etena saccena suvatthi hotu. by virtue of this truth may there be safety!By this truth may there be well-being.by this truth, may you be well!

Khīṇaṁ purāṇaṁ nava natthi sambhavaṁ, The old is destroyed, and nothing new is produced,Ended the old, there is no new taking birth.The old is ended, nothing new is produced;

Virattacittāyatike bhavasmiṁ; (their) minds are unexcited by future rebirth,Dispassioned their minds toward future becoming,their minds have no desire for future rebirth.

Te khīṇabījā avirūḷhichandā, they have destroyed the seeds, and have no desire for growth,they, with no seed, no desire for growth,Withered are the seeds, there’s no desire for growth,

Nibbanti dhīrā yathāyaṁ padīpo; the wise are still, just as this lamp (is still),enlightened, go out like this flame.7those attentive ones are extinguished like this lamp.
