23. Bhikkhunupassayasikkhāpada Instructing nuns in a nunnery

Origin story

First substory

Tena samayena buddho bhagavā sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmiṁ nigrodhārāme. At one time when the Buddha was staying in the Sakyan country in the Banyan Tree Monastery at Kapilavatthu,

Tena kho pana samayena chabbaggiyā bhikkhÅ« bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo ovadanti. the monks from the group of six went to the nunnery and instructed the nuns from the group of six. ā€œNunneryā€ renders upassaya. According to the word definition below, this includes any place where a nun stays. In other words, it spans anything from a single hut, see Bi Pc 35, to a monastery. The Jain text The Ācārāṅga-sÅ«tra, contains a passage that describes an upassaya as including a grassy area, that is, it must have been a compound of buildings or a monastery: ā€œA layman might, for the sake of a mendicant … cutting and clipping the grass outside or within the upāśraya (= upassaya).ā€ See Jacobi, Hermann, trans. ā€œJaina Sutras Part Iā€. Motilal Babarsidass, 1964, p. 94.

Bhikkhuniyo chabbaggiyā bhikkhuniyo etadavocuṁ—Soon afterwards, other nuns said to the nuns from the group of six,

ā€œethāyye, ovādaṁ gamissāmāā€ti. ā€œCome, venerables, let’s go to the instruction.ā€

ā€œYampi mayaṁ, ayye, gaccheyyāma ovādassa kāraṇā, ayyā chabbaggiyā idheva āgantvā amhe ovadantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThere’s no need. The monks from the group of six came and instructed us right here.ā€

Bhikkhuniyo ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—The nuns complained and criticized the monks from the group of six,

ā€œkathaƱhi nāma chabbaggiyā bhikkhÅ« bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadissantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œHow could the monks from the group of six go to the nunnery and instruct the nuns?ā€

Atha kho tā bhikkhuniyo bhikkhūnaṁ etamatthaṁ ārocesuṁ. Then those nuns told the monks.

Ye te bhikkhÅ« appicchā …pe… te ujjhāyanti khiyyanti vipācenti—The monks of few desires complained and criticized those monks,

ā€œkathaƱhi nāma chabbaggiyā bhikkhÅ« bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadissantÄ«ā€ti …pe… ā€œHow could those monks do this?ā€ā€¦

ā€œsaccaṁ kira tumhe, bhikkhave, bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadathāā€ti? ā€œIs it true, monks, that you did this?ā€

ā€œSaccaṁ, bhagavāā€ti. ā€œIt’s true, sir.ā€

Vigarahi buddho bhagavā …pe… The Buddha rebuked them …

kathaƱhi nāma tumhe, moghapurisā, bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadissatha. ā€œFoolish men, how could you do this?

Netaṁ, moghapurisā, appasannānaṁ vā pasādāya …pe… This will affect people’s confidence ā€¦ā€ …

evaƱca pana, bhikkhave, imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddiseyyāthaā€”ā€œAnd, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:

Preliminary ruling

ā€œYo pana bhikkhu bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadeyya, pācittiyanā€ti. ā€˜If a monk goes to a nunnery and instructs the nuns, he commits an offense entailing confession.ā€™ā€

Evañcidaṁ bhagavatā bhikkhūnaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ paññattaṁ hoti. In this way the Buddha laid down this training rule for the monks.

Second substory

Tena kho pana samayena mahāpajāpati gotamī gilānā hoti. Soon afterwards Mahāpajāpati Gotamī became sick.

Therā bhikkhÅ« yena mahāpajāpati gotamÄ« tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; The senior monks went to see her

upasaį¹…kamitvā mahāpajāpatiṁ gotamiṁ etadavocuį¹ā€”ā€œ and said,

kacci, gotami, khamanÄ«yaṁ, kacci yāpanÄ«yanā€ti? ā€œWe hope you’re bearing up, GotamÄ«, we hope you’re getting better?ā€

ā€œNa me, ayyā, khamanÄ«yaṁ na yāpanÄ«yaį¹ā€. ā€œI’m not bearing up, venerables, and I’m not getting better.

ā€œIį¹…ghayyā, dhammaṁ desethāā€ti. Please give me a teaching.ā€

ā€œNa, bhagini, kappati bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo dhammaṁ desetunā€ti kukkuccāyantā na desesuṁ. ā€œIt’s not allowable for us to go a nunnery and teach the nuns.ā€ And being afraid of wrongdoing, they did not teach her.

Atha kho bhagavā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacÄ«varamādāya yena mahāpajāpati gotamÄ« tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā paƱƱatte āsane nisÄ«di. Soon afterwards, after robing up in the morning, the Buddha took his bowl and robe and went to Mahāpajāpati GotamÄ« where he sat down on the prepared seat.

Nisajja kho bhagavā mahāpajāpatiṁ gotamiṁ etadavoca—He said to her,

ā€œkacci, gotami, khamanÄ«yaṁ, kacci yāpanÄ«yanā€ti? ā€œI hope you’re bearing up, GotamÄ«, I hope you’re getting better?ā€

ā€œPubbe me, bhante, therā bhikkhÅ« āgantvā dhammaṁ desenti. ā€œPreviously, sir, the senior monks would come and teach me,

Tena me phāsu hoti. and because of that I would be comfortable.

Idāni panaā€”ā€˜bhagavatā paį¹ikkhittan’ti, kukkuccāyantā na desenti. But now that this has been prohibited by the Buddha, they don’t teach because they’re afraid of wrongdoing.

Tena me na phāsu hotÄ«ā€ti. Because of that I’m not comfortable.ā€

Atha kho bhagavā mahāpajāpatiṁ gotamiṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā sampahaṁsetvā uṭṭhāyāsanā pakkāmi. After instructing, inspiring, and gladdening her with a teaching, the Buddha got up from his seat and left.

Atha kho bhagavā etasmiṁ nidāne etasmiṁ pakaraṇe dhammiṁ kathaṁ katvā bhikkhÅ« āmantesi—Soon afterwards the Buddha gave a teaching and addressed the monks:

ā€œanujānāmi, bhikkhave, bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā gilānaṁ bhikkhuniṁ ovadituṁ. ā€œMonks, I allow you to go a nunnery and instruct a sick nun.

EvaƱca pana, bhikkhave, imaṁ sikkhāpadaṁ uddiseyyātha—And so, monks, this training rule should be recited like this:

Final ruling

ā€œYo pana bhikkhu bhikkhunupassayaṁ upasaį¹…kamitvā bhikkhuniyo ovadeyya, aƱƱatra samayā, pācittiyaṁ. ā€˜If a monk goes to a nunnery and instructs the nuns, except on an appropriate occasion, he commits an offense entailing confession.

Tatthāyaṁ samayo. Gilānā hoti bhikkhunī—ayaṁ tattha samayoā€ti. This is the appropriate occasion: a nun is sick.ā€™ā€

Non-offenses

Anāpatti—There is no offense:

samaye, if it is an appropriate occasion;

uddesaṁ dento, if he recites;

paripucchaṁ dento, if he tests them;

ā€œosārehi ayyāā€ti vuccamāno osāreti, if he recites when asked to do so; That osāreti must mean ā€œreciteā€ can be seen from Bu Pc 4:2.3.5 where there is no offense if osārentaṁ opāteti, ā€œhe prompts one who is osārentaṁ.ā€ The difference between uddesaṁ deti and osāreti is not clear to me.

pañhaṁ pucchati, if he asks a question;

pañhaṁ puṭṭho katheti, if he replies when asked a question;

aƱƱassatthāya bhaṇantaṁ bhikkhuniyo suṇanti, if he is speaking for the benefit of someone else and the nuns listen in;

sikkhamānāya, if it is to a trainee nun;

sāmaṇeriyā, if it is to a novice nun;

ummattakassa, if he is insane;

ādikammikassāti. if he is the first offender.

Bhikkhunupassayasikkhāpadaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ tatiyaṁ. The training rule on instructing nuns in a nunnery, the third, is finished.
