āCattÄrimÄni, bhikkhave, devÄnaį¹ devapadÄni avisuddhÄnaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ visuddhiyÄ apariyodÄtÄnaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ pariyodapanÄya. āMendicants, these four footprints of the gods are in order to purify unpurified beings and cleanse unclean beings.

Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako buddhe aveccappasÄdena samannÄgato hotiāFirstly, a noble disciple has experiential confidence in the Buddha:
itipi so bhagavÄ ā¦pe⦠satthÄ devamanussÄnaį¹ buddho bhagavÄti. āThat Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those fit for training, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.ā
So iti paį¹isaƱcikkhati: Then they reflect:
ākiį¹ nu kho devÄnaį¹ devapadanāti? āWhat now is the footprint of the gods?ā
So evaį¹ pajÄnÄti: They understand:
āabyÄbajjhaparame khvÄhaį¹ etarahi deve suį¹Ämi. āI hear that these days the gods consider non-harming to be supreme.
Na ca kho panÄhaį¹ kiƱci byÄbÄdhemi tasaį¹ vÄ thÄvaraį¹ vÄ. But I donāt hurt any creature firm or frail.
AddhÄhaį¹ devapadadhammasamannÄgato viharÄmÄ«āti. I definitely live in possession of a footprint of the gods.ā
Idaį¹ paį¹hamaį¹ devÄnaį¹ devapadaį¹ avisuddhÄnaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ visuddhiyÄ apariyodÄtÄnaį¹ sattÄnaį¹ pariyodapanÄya. This is the first footprint of the gods in order to purify unpurified beings and cleanse unclean beings.

Puna caparaį¹, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvako ariyakantehi sÄ«lehi samannÄgato hoti akhaį¹įøehi ā¦pe⦠samÄdhisaį¹vattanikehi. Furthermore, a noble discipleās ethical conduct is loved by the noble ones, unbroken, impeccable, spotless, and unmarred, liberating, praised by sensible people, not mistaken, and leading to immersion.
