Sahampatibrahmasutta With the Divinity Sahampati
Ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ uruvelÄyaį¹ viharati najjÄ neraƱjarÄya tÄ«re ajapÄlanigrodhe paį¹hamÄbhisambuddho. At one time, when he was first awakened, the Buddha was staying in UruvelÄ at the goatherdās banyan tree on the bank of the NeraƱjarÄ River.
Atha kho bhagavato rahogatassa paį¹isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapÄdi: Then as he was in private retreat this thought came to his mind,
āpaƱcindriyÄni bhÄvitÄni bahulÄ«katÄni amatogadhÄni honti amataparÄyaį¹Äni amatapariyosÄnÄni. āWhen these five faculties are developed and cultivated they have freedom from death as their objective, destination, and culmination.
KatamÄni paƱca? What five?
Saddhindriyaį¹ bhÄvitaį¹ bahulÄ«kataį¹ amatogadhaį¹ hoti amataparÄyaį¹aį¹ amatapariyosÄnaį¹. The faculties of faith,
VÄ«riyindriyaį¹ ā¦pe⦠energy,
satindriyaį¹ ā¦pe⦠mindfulness,
samÄdhindriyaį¹ ā¦pe⦠immersion,
paƱƱindriyaį¹ bhÄvitaį¹ bahulÄ«kataį¹ amatogadhaį¹ hoti amataparÄyaį¹aį¹ amatapariyosÄnaį¹. and wisdom.
ImÄni paƱcindriyÄni bhÄvitÄni bahulÄ«katÄni amatogadhÄni honti amataparÄyaį¹Äni amatapariyosÄnÄnÄ«āti. When these five faculties are developed and cultivated they have freedom from death as their objective, destination, and culmination.ā
Atha kho brahmÄ sahampati bhagavato cetasÄ cetoparivitakkamaƱƱÄyaāseyyathÄpi nÄma balavÄ puriso samiƱjitaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ pasÄreyya, pasÄritaį¹ vÄ bÄhaį¹ samiƱjeyya; evameva brahmaloke antarahito bhagavato purato pÄturahosi. Then the divinity Sahampati knew what the Buddha was thinking. As easily as a strong person would extend or contract their arm, he vanished from the realm of divinity and reappeared in front of the Buddha.
Atha kho brahmÄ sahampati ekaį¹saį¹ uttarÄsaį¹
gaį¹ karitvÄ yena bhagavÄ tenaƱjaliį¹ paį¹ÄmetvÄ bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: He arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms toward the Buddha, and said:
āevametaį¹, bhagavÄ, evametaį¹ sugata. āThatās so true, Blessed One! Thatās so true, Holy One!
PaƱcindriyÄni bhÄvitÄni bahulÄ«katÄni amatogadhÄni honti amataparÄyaį¹Äni amatapariyosÄnÄni. When these five faculties are developed and cultivated they have freedom from death as their objective, destination, and culmination.

ImÄni paƱcindriyÄni bhÄvitÄni bahulÄ«katÄni amatogadhÄni honti amataparÄyaį¹Äni amatapariyosÄnÄni. When these five faculties are developed and cultivated they have freedom from death as their objective, destination, and culmination.
BhÅ«tapubbÄhaį¹, bhante, kassape sammÄsambuddhe brahmacariyaį¹ acariį¹. Once upon a time, sir, I lived the spiritual life under the fully awakened Buddha Kassapa.
Tatrapi maį¹ evaį¹ jÄnanti: There they knew me as
āsahako bhikkhu, sahako bhikkhÅ«āti. the mendicant Sahaka.
So khvÄhaį¹, bhante, imesaį¹yeva paƱcannaį¹ indriyÄnaį¹ bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ kÄmesu kÄmacchandaį¹ virÄjetvÄ kÄyassa bhedÄ paraį¹ maraį¹Ä sugatiį¹ brahmalokaį¹ upapanno. Because of developing and cultivating these same five faculties I lost desire for sensual pleasures. When my body broke up, after death, I was reborn in a good place, in the realm of divinity.
Tatrapi maį¹ evaį¹ jÄnanti: There they know me as
ābrahmÄ sahampati, brahmÄ sahampatÄ«āti. the divinity Sahampati.
Evametaį¹, bhagavÄ, evametaį¹ sugata. Thatās so true, Blessed One! Thatās so true, Holy One!
Ahametaį¹ jÄnÄmi, ahametaį¹ passÄmi yathÄ imÄni paƱcindriyÄni bhÄvitÄni bahulÄ«katÄni amatogadhÄni honti amataparÄyaį¹Äni amatapariyosÄnÄnÄ«āti. I know and see how when these five faculties are developed and cultivated they have freedom from death as their objective, destination, and culmination.ā
