Paį¹hamapubbÄrÄmasutta At the Eastern Monastery (1st)
Evaį¹ me sutaį¹āSo I have heard.
ekaį¹ samayaį¹ bhagavÄ sÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati pubbÄrÄme migÄramÄtupÄsÄde. At one time the Buddha was staying near SÄvatthÄ« in the stilt longhouse of MigÄraās mother in the Eastern Monastery.
Tatra kho bhagavÄ bhikkhÅ« Ämantesi: There the Buddha addressed the mendicants:
ākatinaį¹ nu kho, bhikkhave, indriyÄnaį¹ bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byÄkaroti: āMendicants, how many faculties must a mendicant develop and cultivate so that they can declare enlightenment:
ākhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti pajÄnÄmÄ«āti? āI understand: āRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this placeāā?ā
āBhagavaį¹mÅ«lakÄ no, bhante, dhammÄ ā¦pe⦠āOur teachings are rooted in the Buddha. ā¦ā
āekassa kho, bhikkhave, indriyassa bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byÄkaroti: āA mendicant must develop and cultivate one faculty so that they can declare enlightenment. The following series of Suttas expands the number of faculties required. This is not a contradiction, because each faculty depends on the prior development of the previous ones.
ākhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti pajÄnÄmÄ«ti.
Katamassa ekassa paƱƱindriyassa paƱƱavato, bhikkhave, ariyasÄvakassa tadanvayÄ saddhÄ saį¹į¹hÄti, tadanvayaį¹ vÄ«riyaį¹ saį¹į¹hÄti, tadanvayÄ sati saį¹į¹hÄti, tadanvayo samÄdhi saį¹į¹hÄti. What one? The faculty of wisdom. When a noble disciple has wisdom, the faith, energy, mindfulness, and immersion that follow along with that become stabilized. This can apply to wisdom generally, but specifically the realization of the four noble truths at stream-entry, after which it is not possible to completely lose the faculties.
Imassa kho, bhikkhave, ekassa indriyassa bhÄvitattÄ bahulÄ«katattÄ khÄ«į¹Äsavo bhikkhu aƱƱaį¹ byÄkaroti: This is the one faculty that a mendicant must develop and cultivate so that they can declare enlightenment:
ākhÄ«į¹Ä jÄti, vusitaį¹ brahmacariyaį¹, kataį¹ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹, nÄparaį¹ itthattÄyÄāti pajÄnÄmÄ«āti. āI understand: āRebirth is ended, the spiritual journey has been completed, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this place.āāā
