Saṁyutta Nikāya 48.12 Linked Discourses 48.12

2. Mudutaravagga 2. Weaker

Paį¹hamasaį¹…khittasutta In Brief (1st)

ā€œPaƱcimāni, bhikkhave, indriyāni. ā€œMendicants, there are these five faculties. In this and following discourses the concern shifts from definition to spiritual potential or capacity. We see who possesses the faculties, and understand how their development relates to the stages of realization.

Katamāni paƱca? What five?

Saddhindriyaṁ …pe… paƱƱindriyaṁ—The faculties of faith, energy, mindfulness, immersion, and wisdom.

imāni kho, bhikkhave, paƱcindriyāni. These are the five faculties.

Imesaṁ kho, bhikkhave, paƱcannaṁ indriyānaṁ samattā paripÅ«rattā arahaṁ hoti, tato mudutarehi anāgāmÄ« hoti, tato mudutarehi sakadāgāmÄ« hoti, tato mudutarehi sotāpanno hoti, tato mudutarehi dhammānusārÄ« hoti, tato mudutarehi saddhānusārÄ« hotÄ«ā€ti. Someone who has completed and fulfilled these five faculties is a perfected one. If they are weaker than that, they’re a non-returner. If they are weaker still, they’re a once-returner. If they are weaker still, they’re a stream-enterer. If they’re weaker still, they’re a follower of teachings. If they’re weaker still, they’re a follower by faith.ā€ Even the least of those on the path to stream-entry possess all five faculties to some degree. For the follower of teachings and follower by faith, see SN 25.1 and notes.

Dutiyaṁ.
