Kāyasutta The Body

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

ā€œSeyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ayaṁ kāyo āhāraį¹į¹hitiko, āhāraṁ paį¹icca tiį¹į¹hati, anāhāro no tiį¹į¹hati; ā€œMendicants, this body is sustained by food. It depends on food to continue, and without food it doesn’t continue. For the phrase ā€œsustained by foodā€ see DN 33:1.8.2, AN 10.27:10.5, AN 10.28:4.5, Kp 4:1.2 and notes. The word āhāra, literally ā€œintakeā€, may be translated as ā€œfoodā€ or ā€œfuelā€ depending on context.

evameva kho, bhikkhave, paƱca nÄ«varaṇā āhāraį¹į¹hitikā, āhāraṁ paį¹icca tiį¹į¹hanti, anāhārā no tiį¹į¹hanti. In the same way, the five hindrances are sustained by fuel. They depend on fuel to continue, and without fuel they don’t continue. This passage can be seen as an expansion of the fourth satipaį¹į¹hāna, ā€œobservation of principlesā€, where the ā€œprinciplesā€ underlying the rise and fall of the hindrances and awakening factors are investigated. Similar teachings recur throughout this section, for example SN 46.51.

Ko ca, bhikkhave, āhāro anuppannassa vā kāmacchandassa uppādāya, uppannassa vā kāmacchandassa bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya? And what fuels the arising of sensual desire, or, when it has arisen, makes it increase and grow?

Atthi, bhikkhave, subhanimittaṁ. There is the feature of beauty. ā€œFeature of beautyā€ is subhanimitta. In early Pali, nimitta is used for a feature or quality of the mind that, when focused on, promotes the growth of similar or related qualities. Thus focusing on beauty fosters the desire for that beauty. (See MN 5:6.1).

Tattha ayonisomanasikārabahulÄ«kāro—Frequent irrational application of mind to that ā€œIrrationalā€ attention sees the beauty as something to be held on to and appropriated. The flaw lies not in the object, but in the response.

There are qualities that are skillful and unskillful, blameworthy and blameless, inferior and superior, and those with a portion of dark or bright. Discrimination between good and evil is the foundation of wisdom. | The phrase sappaį¹ibhāgā, which appears here in a stock phrase, is given three mutually exclusive explanations in the commentary (see Bodhi’s note on this sutta). I think the commentary is influenced by the later sense of paį¹ibhāgā as a technical meditation term meaning ā€œcounterpartā€. This sense is, however, absent from Sanskrit, where pratibhāga means ā€œportion, shareā€ (Rig Veda 8.99.3, Manu 8.307). The sense would then refer to individuals ā€œwith a portionā€ of dark or bright qualities. This is, in fact, the theme of the only other passage in Pali that uses this term (AN 6.62:10.2).
