Atha kho ÄyasmÄ uttiyo yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami ā¦pe⦠ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ uttiyo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Uttiya went up to the Buddha ⦠and asked him, A wanderer named Uttiya appears in AN 10.95, while a mendicant of the same name becomes an arahant in SN 47.16. One might imagine these are the same person, were it not that verses are attributed to Uttiyas at Thag 1.30, Thag 1.54, and Thag 1.99.
āidha mayhaį¹, bhante, rahogatassa paį¹isallÄ«nassa evaį¹ cetaso parivitakko udapÄdi: āJust now, sir, as I was in private retreat this thought came to mind.

PaƱcime kho, uttiya, kÄmaguį¹Ä vuttÄ mayÄ. I have spoken of these five kinds of sensual stimulation.

CakkhuviƱƱeyyÄ rÅ«pÄ iį¹į¹hÄ kantÄ manÄpÄ piyarÅ«pÄ kÄmÅ«pasaį¹hitÄ rajanÄ«yÄ, Sights known by the eye, which are likable, desirable, agreeable, pleasant, sensual, and arousing.

giko maggo bhÄvetabbo. The noble eightfold path should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation.

giko maggo? What is the noble eightfold path?
Seyyathidaį¹āsammÄdiį¹į¹hi ā¦pe⦠sammÄsamÄdhi. It is right view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
Imesaį¹ kho, uttiya, paƱcannaį¹ kÄmaguį¹Änaį¹ pahÄnÄya ayaį¹ ariyo aį¹į¹haį¹
giko maggo bhÄvetabboāti. This is the noble eightfold path that should be developed to give up these five kinds of sensual stimulation.ā
