Kammanirodhasutta The Cessation of Deeds
āNavapurÄį¹Äni, bhikkhave, kammÄni desessÄmi kammanirodhaį¹ kammanirodhagÄminiƱca paį¹ipadaį¹. āMendicants, I will teach you old deeds, new deeds, the cessation of deeds, and the practice that leads to the cessation of deeds.
Taį¹ suį¹Ätha, sÄdhukaį¹ manasi karotha, bhÄsissÄmÄ«ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak. ā¦
KatamaƱca, bhikkhave, purÄį¹akammaį¹? And what is old deeds?
Cakkhu, bhikkhave, purÄį¹akammaį¹ abhisaį¹
khataį¹ abhisaƱcetayitaį¹ vedaniyaį¹ daį¹į¹habbaį¹ ā¦pe⦠The eye is old deeds. It should be seen as produced by choices and intentions, as something to be felt. That is to say, the fact that the eye exists is because we were born into this life driven by the deeds in past lives.
jivhÄ purÄį¹akammÄ abhisaį¹
khatÄ abhisaƱcetayitÄ vedaniyÄ daį¹į¹habbÄ ā¦pe⦠The ear ⦠nose ⦠tongue ⦠body ā¦
mano purÄį¹akammo abhisaį¹
khato abhisaƱcetayito vedaniyo daį¹į¹habbo. mind is old deeds. It should be seen as produced by choices and intentions, as something to be felt.
Idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, purÄį¹akammaį¹. This is called old deeds.
Katamañca, bhikkhave, navakamma� And what is new deeds?
Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, etarahi kammaį¹ karoti kÄyena vÄcÄya manasÄ, The deeds you currently perform by way of body, speech, and mind.
idaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, navakammaį¹. These are called new deeds.
Katamo ca, bhikkhave, kammanirodho? And what is the cessation of deeds?
Yo kho, bhikkhave, kÄyakammavacÄ«kammamanokammassa nirodhÄ vimuttiį¹ phusati, When you experience freedom due to the cessation of deeds by body, speech, and mind.
ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, kammanirodho. This is called the cessation of deeds.
KatamÄ ca, bhikkhave, kammanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄ? And whatās the practice that leads to the cessation of deeds?
Ayameva ariyo aį¹į¹haį¹
giko maggo, seyyathidaį¹āIt is simply this noble eightfold path, that is:
sammÄdiį¹į¹hi, sammÄsaį¹
kappo, sammÄvÄcÄ, sammÄkammanto, sammÄÄjÄ«vo, sammÄvÄyÄmo, sammÄsati, sammÄsamÄdhiāright view, right purpose, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right immersion.
ayaį¹ vuccati, bhikkhave, kammanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄ. This is called the practice that leads to the cessation of deeds.
Iti kho, bhikkhave, desitaį¹ mayÄ purÄį¹akammaį¹, desitaį¹ navakammaį¹, desito kammanirodho, desitÄ kammanirodhagÄminÄ« paį¹ipadÄ. So, mendicants, Iāve taught you old deeds, new deeds, the cessation of deeds, and the practice that leads to the cessation of deeds.
Yaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, satthÄrÄ karaį¹Ä«yaį¹ sÄvakÄnaį¹ hitesinÄ anukampakena anukampaį¹ upÄdÄya, kataį¹ vo taį¹ mayÄ. Out of sympathy, Iāve done what a teacher should do who wants whatās best for their disciples.
EtÄni, bhikkhave, rukkhamÅ«lÄni, etÄni suƱƱÄgÄrÄni. JhÄyatha, bhikkhave, mÄ pamÄdattha; mÄ pacchÄvippaį¹isÄrino ahuvattha. Ayaį¹ vo amhÄkaį¹ anusÄsanÄ«āti. Here are these roots of trees, and here are these empty huts. Practice absorption, mendicants! Donāt be negligent! Donāt regret it later! This is my instruction to you.ā
