PhaggunapaƱhÄsutta Phaggunaās Question
Atha kho ÄyasmÄ phagguno ā¦pe⦠ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ phagguno bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: And then Venerable Phagguna went up to the Buddha ⦠and said to him:
āAtthi nu kho, bhante, taį¹ cakkhu, yena cakkhunÄ atÄ«te buddhe parinibbute chinnapapaƱce chinnavaį¹ume pariyÄdinnavaį¹į¹e sabbadukkhavÄ«tivaį¹į¹e paƱƱÄpayamÄno paƱƱÄpeyya ā¦pe⦠āSir, suppose someone were to describe the Buddhas of the past who have become fully quenched, cut off proliferation, cut off the course, finished off the cycle, and passed beyond all suffering. Does the eye exist by which they could be described? Cited at Kv 1.6:95.3 with slight change. | This is the only doctrinal context where we find vaį¹uma (ācourseā). The commentary explains it as the ācourse of cravingā. However, in Buddhist Sanskrit we find the phrases chinnaį¹ vartmaį¹ na vartati (MahÄvastu 2.416) and chinnaį¹ vartma na pravartate (NidÄna Saį¹yukta 11.6), which recall the Pali phrase vaį¹į¹aį¹ vattati (DN 15:22.6), where vaį¹į¹a occurs in the next word of the current passage. This suggests that the sense is, rather, the ācourse of transmigrationā, as in the later Sanskrit phrase saį¹sÄravartmani.
