2. Dutiyamāravagga 2. About Māra (2nd)

Māradhammasutta Subject to Māra

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā rādho bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: Seated to one side, Venerable Rādha said to the Buddha:

ā€œā€˜māradhammo, māradhammo’ti, bhante, vuccati. ā€œSir, they speak of ā€˜Māra nature’. ā€œMāra natureā€ is māradhamma, glossed by the commentary as ā€œliable to dieā€ (maraṇadhamma). In this Saṁyutta, the suffix -dhamma, which normally creates an adjective of the sense ā€œliable toā€, is construed as a noun.

Katamo nu kho, bhante, māradhammoā€ti? What is of Māra nature?ā€

ā€œRÅ«paṁ kho, rādha, māradhammo, vedanā māradhammo, saƱƱā māradhammo, saį¹…khārā māradhammo, viññāṇaṁ māradhammo. ā€œRādha, form is of Māra nature. Feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness are of Māra nature.

Evaṁ passaṁ …pe… Seeing this …

nāparaṁ itthattāyāti pajānātÄ«ā€ti. They understand: ā€˜ā€¦ there is nothing further for this place.ā€™ā€

Dutiyaṁ.
