Paį¹isallāṇasutta Retreat

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī.

ā€œPaį¹isallāṇe, bhikkhave, yogamāpajjatha. ā€œMendicants, meditate in retreat. Mendicants should ā€œmeditate in retreatā€ (paį¹isallāṇe yogamāpajjatha) in order to understand the six senses (SN 35.100, SN 35.161) and the four noble truths (SN 56.2). | Pali yoga (ā€œyokeā€) can mean ā€œeffortā€, as in yogaṁ āpajjati, ā€œengage in effort (regarding that)ā€, which I render ā€œget involved (in that)ā€ (AN 7.28:1.7). Compare the English expression ā€œharness energyā€. The related expression yogamāpajjatha is literally ā€œengage in effort in retreatā€. This means primarily to meditate, and indeed Pali yoga shades into the sense ā€œmeditation, immersionā€ (Dhp 282:1), a sense that anticipates PataƱjali’s definition of yoga as ā€œthe cessation of transformations of mindā€ (YogasÅ«tra 1.2).

Paį¹isallīṇo, bhikkhave, bhikkhu yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti. A mendicant in retreat truly understands.

Kiñca yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti? What do they truly understand?

RÅ«passa samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca, vedanāya samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca, saƱƱāya samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca, saį¹…khārānaṁ samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca, viññāṇassa samudayaƱca atthaį¹…gamaƱca …pe… The origin and disappearance of form, feeling, perception, choices, and consciousness. ā€¦ā€

(yathā paṭhamasutte tathā vitthāretabbo.) (Tell in full as in the previous discourse.)

Chaṭṭhaṁ.
