āIdhÄhaį¹, Ävuso, gijjhakÅ«į¹Ä pabbatÄ orohanto addasaį¹ sÅ«cilomaį¹ purisaį¹ vehÄsaį¹ gacchantaį¹. āJust now, reverend, as I was descending from Vultureās Peak Mountain I saw a man whose body hairs were needles flying through the air.
Tassa tÄ sÅ«ciyo uppatitvÄ uppatitvÄ tasseva kÄye nipatanti. And those needles kept rising up and falling on his body

eso, bhikkhave, satto imasmiį¹yeva rÄjagahe sÅ«to ahosi ā¦peā¦. āThat being used to be an equerry right here in RÄjagaha. ā¦ā The sÅ«ta (āequerriesā) were members of the kingās guard (Atharva Veda 3.5.7, Åatapatha BrÄhmaį¹a 3.4.1.7, Bį¹hadÄraį¹yaka Upaniį¹£ad 4.3.37) standing in seniority between the kingās brother and a village headman (ÅB 5.4.4.17). Later texts say they led the cavalry. They bore quivers of arrows (ÅB 13.4.2.4), which fits their punishment.
