Pubbesambodhasutta Before Awakening
SÄvatthiyaį¹ viharati. At SÄvatthÄ«.
āPubbeva me, bhikkhave, sambodhÄ anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato etadahosi: āMendicants, before my awakeningāwhen I was still unawakened but intent on awakeningāI thought: This echoes SN 12.10:1.1 and SN 12.65:1.2.
āko nu kho pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ assÄdo, ko ÄdÄ«navo, kiį¹ nissaraį¹aį¹; āWhatās the gratification, the drawback, and the escape when it comes to the earth element ā¦
ko ÄpodhÄtuyÄ assÄdo, ko ÄdÄ«navo, kiį¹ nissaraį¹aį¹; the water element ā¦
ko tejodhÄtuyÄ assÄdo, ko ÄdÄ«navo, kiį¹ nissaraį¹aį¹; the fire element ā¦
ko vÄyodhÄtuyÄ assÄdo, ko ÄdÄ«navo, kiį¹ nissaraį¹anāti? and the air element?ā
Tassa mayhaį¹, bhikkhave, etadahosi: Then it occurred to me:
āyaį¹ kho pathavÄ«dhÄtuį¹ paį¹icca uppajjati sukhaį¹ somanassaį¹, ayaį¹ pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ assÄdo; āThe pleasure and happiness that arise from the earth element: this is its gratification.
yaį¹ pathavÄ«dhÄtu aniccÄ dukkhÄ vipariį¹ÄmadhammÄ, ayaį¹ pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ ÄdÄ«navo; That the earth element is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback.
yo pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ chandarÄgavinayo chandarÄgappahÄnaį¹, idaį¹ pathavÄ«dhÄtuyÄ nissaraį¹aį¹. Removing and giving up desire and greed for the earth element: this is its escape.
Yaį¹ ÄpodhÄtuį¹ paį¹icca ā¦pe⦠The pleasure and happiness that arise from the water element ā¦
yaį¹ tejodhÄtuį¹ paį¹icca ā¦pe⦠The pleasure and happiness that arise from the fire element ā¦
yaį¹ vÄyodhÄtuį¹ paį¹icca uppajjati sukhaį¹ somanassaį¹, ayaį¹ vÄyodhÄtuyÄ assÄdo; The pleasure and happiness that arise from the air element: this is its gratification.
yaį¹ vÄyodhÄtu aniccÄ dukkhÄ vipariį¹ÄmadhammÄ, ayaį¹ vÄyodhÄtuyÄ ÄdÄ«navo; That the air element is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback.
yo vÄyodhÄtuyÄ chandarÄgavinayo chandarÄgappahÄnaį¹, idaį¹ vÄyodhÄtuyÄ nissaraį¹aį¹ā. Removing and giving up desire and greed for the air element: this is its escape.ā
YÄvakÄ«vaƱcÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, imÄsaį¹ catunnaį¹ dhÄtÅ«naį¹ evaį¹ assÄdaƱca assÄdato ÄdÄ«navaƱca ÄdÄ«navato nissaraį¹aƱca nissaraį¹ato yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ na abbhaƱƱÄsiį¹, neva tÄvÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, sadevake loke samÄrake sabrahmake sassamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹iyÄ pajÄya sadevamanussÄya anuttaraį¹ sammÄsambodhiį¹ abhisambuddhoti paccaƱƱÄsiį¹. As long as I didnāt truly understand these four elementsā gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I didnāt announce my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, MÄras, and divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans. The four noble truths were similarly extolled in the first discourse (SN 56.11), and this was subsequently said of several major teaching frameworks. Seeing one part of the Dhamma implies seeing them all.
Yato ca khvÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, imÄsaį¹ catunnaį¹ dhÄtÅ«naį¹ evaį¹ assÄdaƱca assÄdato ÄdÄ«navaƱca ÄdÄ«navato nissaraį¹aƱca nissaraį¹ato yathÄbhÅ«taį¹ abbhaƱƱÄsiį¹, athÄhaį¹, bhikkhave, sadevake loke samÄrake sabrahmake sassamaį¹abrÄhmaį¹iyÄ pajÄya sadevamanussÄya anuttaraį¹ sammÄsambodhiį¹ abhisambuddhoti paccaƱƱÄsiį¹. But when I did truly understand these four elementsā gratification, drawback, and escape in this way for what they are, I announced my supreme perfect awakening in this world with its gods, MÄras, and divinities, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, its gods and humans.
ĆÄį¹aƱca pana me dassanaį¹ udapÄdi: Knowledge and vision arose in me:
āakuppÄ me vimutti, ayamantimÄ jÄti, natthi dÄni punabbhavoāāti. āMy freedom is unshakable; this is my last rebirth; now thereāll be no more future lives.āā
Dutiyaį¹.
