Paṭipadāsutta Practice The Two WaysThe Way (or Course).

ā€œmicchāpaį¹­ipadaƱca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi sammāpaį¹­ipadaƱca. ā€œMendicants, I will teach you the wrong practice and the right practice. ā€œBhikkhus, I will teach you the wrong way and the right way. [the Exalted One said]:— ā€œI will teach you, Monks, both the wrong way and the tight way.

Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmÄ«ā€ti. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.ā€ Listen to that and attend closely, I will speak.ā€Listen to it, give your minds thoroughly and I will speak.

ā€œEvaṁ, bhanteā€ti kho te bhikkhÅ« bhagavato paccassosuṁ. ā€œYes, sir,ā€ they replied. ā€œYes, venerable sir,ā€ those bhikkhus replied.’ ā€˜Even so, Lord,’ responded those Monks.

Bhagavā etadavoca: The Buddha said this: The Blessed One said this:The Exalted One spake this:—

ā€œKatamā ca, bhikkhave, micchāpaį¹­ipadā? ā€œAnd what’s the wrong practice? ā€œAnd what, bhikkhus, is the wrong way?Which, Monks, is the wrong way?

Avijjāpaccayā, bhikkhave, saį¹…khārā; Ignorance is a requirement for choices. With ignorance as condition, volitional formations [come to be];ā€˜Conditioned by ignorance activities come to pass;

saį¹…khārapaccayā viññāṇaṁ …pe… Choices are a requirement for consciousness. … with volitional formations as condition, consciousness….conditioned by activities, consciousness...

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates. Such is the origin of this whole mass of suffering.even [the way of] the uprising of this entire mass of ill.

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, micchāpaṭipadā. This is called the wrong practice. This, bhikkhus, is called the wrong way.This is called the wrong way.

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, sammāpaį¹­ipadā? And what’s the right practice? And what, bhikkhus, is the right way?And which is the right way?

Avijjāya tveva asesavirāganirodhā saį¹…khāranirodho; When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, choices cease. With the remainderless fading away and cessation of ignorance comes cessation of volitional formations;ā€˜But from the utter fading away and ceasing of ignorance [comes] the ceasing of activities ;

saį¹…khāranirodhā viññāṇanirodho …pe… When choices cease, consciousness ceases. … with the cessation of volitional formations, cessation of consciousness. …from the ceasing of activities [comes] ceasing of consciousnessā€

evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa nirodho hoti. That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases. Such is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.even [the way of] the ceasing of this entire mass of ill.
