2. Dutiyavagga Chapter Two

Buddhavandanāsutta Homage to the Buddha Veneration of the Buddha

Sāvatthiyaṁ jetavane. Near SāvatthÄ« in Jeta’s Grove. At SāvatthÄ« in Jeta's Grove.

Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā divāvihāragato hoti paį¹isallÄ«no. Now at that time the Buddha had gone into retreat for the day’s meditation. Now on that occasion the Blessed One had gone for his day's abiding and was in seclusion.

Atha kho sakko ca devānamindo brahmā ca sahampati yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kamiṁsu; upasaį¹…kamitvā paccekaṁ dvārabāhaṁ nissāya aį¹į¹haṁsu. Then Sakka, lord of gods, and the divinity Sahampati approached the Buddha and stationed themselves one by each door-post. The form of this discourse echoes that of SN 11.8, with Sakka and Sahampati in the roles of Verocana and Sakka. This time it is Sakka who gives the inferior verse that is trumped by Sahampati. Then Sakka, lord of the devas, and Brahmā Sahampati approached the Blessed One and stood one at each doorpost.

Atha kho sakko devānamindo bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: Then Sakka spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Then Sakka, lord of the devas, recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œUį¹į¹hehi vÄ«ra vijitasaį¹…gāma, ā€œRise, hero! Victor in battle, with burden put down, ā€œRise up, O hero, victor in battle! Your burden lowered debt-free one,

Pannabhāra anaṇa vicara loke; wander the world free of debt. wander in the world.

Cittañca te suvimuttaṁ, Your mind is fully liberated, Your mind is fully liberated,

Cando yathā pannarasāya rattinā€ti. like the moon on the fifteenth night.ā€ Sakka speaks to the personal liberation of the Buddha.Like the moon on the fifteenth night.ā€

ā€œNa kho, devānaminda, tathāgatā evaṁ vanditabbā. ā€œLord of gods, that’s not how to pay homage to the Realized Ones. ā€œIt is not in such a way that the Tathagatas are to be venerated, lord of the devas.

EvaƱca kho, devānaminda, tathāgatā vanditabbā: This is how it should be done: The Tathāgatas are to be venerated thus:

ā€˜Uį¹į¹hehi vÄ«ra vijitasaį¹…gāma, ā€˜Rise, hero! Victor in battle, caravan leader, Rise up, O hero, victor in battle! O caravan leader,

Satthavāha anaṇa vicara loke; wander the world free of debt. debt-free one, wander in the world.

Desassu bhagavā dhammaṁ, Let the Blessed One teach the Dhamma! Teach the Dhamma, Blessed One:

AƱƱātāro bhavissantÄ«ā€™ā€ti. There will be those who understand!ā€™ā€ Sahampati encourages the Buddha to teach for the liberation of all beings, as he did after the Buddha’s awakening (SN 6.1:8.1).There will be those who will understand.ā€
