Sakkanāmasutta Sakka In Name Only Yakkha Sakkanāmaka

Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakūṭe pabbate. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the Vulture’s Peak Mountain. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha on Mount Vulture Peak.

Atha kho sakkanāmako yakkho yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Then a spirit who was Sakka in name only went up to the Buddha, and addressed him in verse: The suffix -nāmaka is a slight. Compare ā€œSenior in name onlyā€ (SN 21.10:1.2) and nāmaka in the sense ā€œmere wordsā€ (MN 80:15.5, MN 99:10.5). His verse is similar to that of Māra in SN 4.14.Then the yakkha Sakkanāmaka approached the Blessed One and addressed him in verse:

ā€œSabbaganthappahÄ«nassa, ā€œYou’ve given up all ties, ā€œHaving abandoned all the knots

vippamuttassa te sato; and are fully freed. As one fully released,

Samaṇassa na taṁ sādhu, It’s not a good idea for you, ascetic, It isn’t good for you, an ascetic,

yadaƱƱamanusāsasÄ«ā€ti. to be instructing others.ā€ To be instructing others.ā€

ā€œYena kenaci vaṇṇena, ā€œNo matter how you explain why ā€œIf, O Sakka, for some reason

saṁvāso sakka jāyati; people gather together, Sakka, The Buddha avoids nāmaka and politely calls him ā€œSakkaā€.Intimacy with anyone should arise,

Na taṁ arahati sappaƱƱo, it’s unworthy for a wise person The wise man ought not to stir his mind

manasā anukampituṁ. not to think of the other with sympathy. Accepting the variant ananukampituṁ at Ne 37:194.4, which is endorsed by that text’s commentaries. The text as stands enjoins lack of compassion, which cannot be right.With compassion towards such a person.

Manasā ce pasannena, If you instruct others ā€œBut if with a mind clear and pure

yadaƱƱamanusāsati; with a mind clear and confident, He gives instructions to others,

Na tena hoti saṁyutto, your compassion and empathy He does not become fettered

yānukampā anuddayÄā€ti. don’t create attachments.ā€ By his compassion and sympathy.ā€
