Pesalasutta Good-Hearted The Well-Behaved
Ekaṁ samayaṁ āyasmā vaṅgīso āḷaviyaṁ viharati aggāḷave cetiye āyasmatā nigrodhakappena upajjhāyena saddhiṁ. At one time Venerable Vaṅgīsa was staying near Āḷavī, at Āḷavī’s premier shrine, together with his mentor, Venerable Nigrodhakappa. On one occasion the Venerable Vaṅgīsa was living at Āḷavī at the Aggāḷava Shrine together with his preceptor, the Venerable Nigrodhakappa.
Tena kho pana samayena āyasmā vaṅgīso attano paṭibhānena aññe pesale bhikkhū atimaññati. Now at that time Venerable Vaṅgīsa looked down upon other good-hearted mendicants because of his own eloquence. Now on that occasion, the Venerable Vaṅgīsa, because of his own ingenuity, had been looking down at other well-behaved bhikkhus.
Atha kho āyasmato vaṅgīsassa etadahosi: Then he thought, Then the thought occurred to the Venerable Vaṅgīsa:
“alābhā vata me, na vata me lābhā; dulladdhaṁ vata me, na vata me suladdhaṁ; “It’s my loss, my misfortune, “It is a loss for me indeed, it is no gain for me! It is a mishap for me indeed, it is not well gained by me,
yvāhaṁ attano paṭibhānena aññe pesale bhikkhū atimaññāmī”ti. that I look down on other good-hearted mendicants because of my own eloquence.” that because of my ingenuity I look down upon other well-behaved bhikkhus.”
Atha kho āyasmā vaṅgīso attanāva attano vippaṭisāraṁ uppādetvā tāyaṁ velāyaṁ imā gāthāyo abhāsi: Then, on the occasion of arousing remorse in himself, he recited these verses: Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa, having aroused remorse in himself, on that occasion recited these verses:
“Mānaṁ pajahassu gotama, “Give up conceit, Gotama! Vaṅgīsa refers to himself by his Vedic clan name of Gotama. The commentary says he was a brahmin, which would explain his training in poetry.“Abandon conceit, O Gotama,
Mānapathañca pajahassu; Completely abandon the different kinds of conceit! And leave the pathway of conceit entirely.
Asesaṁ mānapathasmiṁ, Besotted with the different kinds of conceit, Infatuated with the pathway of conceit,
Samucchito vippaṭisārīhuvā cirarattaṁ. you’ve had regrets for a long time. For a long time you’ve been remorseful.
Makkhena makkhitā pajā, Smeared by smears and slain by conceit, “People smeared by denigration,
Mānahatā nirayaṁ papatanti; people fall into hell. Slain by conceit, fall into hell.
Socanti janā cirarattaṁ, When people slain by conceit are reborn in hell, People sorrow for a long time,
Mānahatā nirayaṁ upapannā. they grieve for a long time. Slain by conceit, reborn in hell.
Na hi socati bhikkhu kadāci, But a mendicant who practices rightly, “But a bhikkhu never sorrows at all,
Maggajino sammāpaṭipanno; a path-victor, never grieves. The “path-victor” is discussed at Snp 1.5.A path-knower practising rightly.
Kittiñca sukhañca anubhoti, They enjoy happiness and a good reputation, He experiences acclaim and happiness;
Dhammadasoti tamāhu pahitattaṁ. and they rightly call him a ‘Seer of Truth’. Truly they call him a seer of Dhamma.
Tasmā akhilodha padhānavā, So being not hard-hearted, but energetic, “Therefore be pliant here and strenuous;
Nīvaraṇāni pahāya visuddho; with hindrances given up, pure; Having abandoned the hindrances, be pure.
Mānañca pahāya asesaṁ, and having completely given up conceit, Having entirely abandoned conceit,
Vijjāyantakaro samitāvī”ti. the one who makes an end with knowledge is assuaged.” The final verse describes the whole Buddhist path in miniature.Be an end-maker by knowledge, peaceful.
