Sanaį¹…kumārasutta With Sanaį¹…kumāra Sanaį¹…kumāra

Evaṁ me sutaṁ—So I have heard. Thus have I heard.

ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati sappinÄ«tÄ«re. At one time the Buddha was staying near Rājagaha, on the bank of the Serpentine River. The Serpentine (sappinÄ«) is probably the modern Panchane (from paƱcānana, ā€œfive-mouthedā€). There was a wanderer’s hermitage on its banks (AN 3.64, AN 4.30, AN 4.185).On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Rājagaha on the bank of the river SappinÄ«.

Atha kho brahmā sanaį¹…kumāro abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkantavaṇṇo kevalakappaṁ sappinÄ«tÄ«raṁ obhāsetvā yena bhagavā tenupasaį¹…kami; upasaį¹…kamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ aį¹į¹hāsi. Then, late at night, the glorious divinity Sanaį¹…kumāra, lighting up the entire Serpentine riverbank, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, Sanaį¹…kumāra (ā€œEveryoungā€) became a Hindu deity closely associated with the worship of Krishna. He first appears in the seventh chapter of the Chāndogya Upaniį¹£ad. He speaks this verse also at DN 3:1.28.2, DN 27:32.2, MN 53:25.3, AN 11.10:6.1, and it was endorsed by the Buddha. He features in two extended discussions among the gods, his appearance heralded by a great light in the north (DN 18:15.1, DN 19:15.1). He also appears in DN 20:20.3.Then, when the night had advanced, Brahmā Sanaį¹…kumāra, of stunning beauty, illuminating the entire bank of the river SappinÄ«, approached the Blessed One, paid homage to him, and stood to one side.

Ekamantaṁ į¹hito kho brahmā sanaį¹…kumāro bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: and spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Standing to one side, he recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œKhattiyo seį¹į¹ho janetasmiṁ, ā€œThe aristocrat is best among people ā€œThe khattiya is the best among people

ye gottapaṭisārino; who take clan as the standard. For those whose standard is the clan,

Vijjācaraṇasampanno, But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct But one accomplished in knowledge and conduct

so seį¹į¹ho devamānuseā€ti. is best among gods and humans.ā€ Is best among devas and humans. ā€

Idamavoca brahmā sanaį¹…kumāro. That is what the divinity Sanaį¹…kumāra said, This is what Brahmā Sanaį¹…kumāra said.

SamanuƱƱo satthā ahosi. and the Teacher concurred. The Teacher approved.

Atha kho brahmā sanaį¹…kumāro ā€œsamanuƱƱo me satthāā€ti bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaṁ katvā tatthevantaradhāyÄ«ti. Then the divinity Sanaį¹…kumāra, knowing that the Teacher concurred, bowed and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there. Then Brahmā Sanaį¹…kumāra, thinking, ā€œThe Teacher has approved of me, ā€ paid homage to the Blessed One and, keeping him on his right, he disappeared right there.
