Subrahmasutta Subrahma the Deva’s Son With Subrahmā Subrahmā
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho subrahmā devaputto bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Standing to one side, Subrahma the deva’s son recited this verse to the Blessed One: Standing to one side, the godling Subrahmā addressed the Buddha in verse: Probably not the same individual as the “independent divinity” Subrahmā (SN 6.6–8 and DN 20:20.1). In the Rig Veda, subrahma meant “good sacred formulation” (Rig Veda 7.16.2, 10.47.3, 10.62.4)Standing to one side, the young deva Subrahmā addressed the Blessed One in verse:
“Niccaṁ utrastamidaṁ cittaṁ, “Constantly troubled is this mind, “This mind is always anxious, “Always frightened is this mind,
niccaṁ ubbiggamidaṁ mano; constantly trembling this heart, this mind is always stressed The mind is always agitated
Anuppannesu kicchesu, over duties that have yet to arise, Reading kiccesu with the Thai version. The Burmese version has kicchesu, “troubles.”about stresses that haven’t arisen About unarisen problems

“Nāññatra bojjhā tapasā, “Apart from the factors for awakening, austerity, Reading bojjhaṅga-tapasā with the Thai version. The Burmese version has bojjhā tapasā, “from awakening, from austerity.” The Commentary notes that bojjhaṅga/bojjhā refers to the development of the factors of awakening (see MN 118). Tapasā, it says, refers to undertaking the dhutaṅga practices (see Thag 16:7).“Not without understanding and fervor, PTS reads bojjhaṅgatapasā; Yogācārabhūmi Śarīrārthagāthā 5.2 hasjñānatapaso; SA 596 seems to pass over bojjha; while SA2 181 has 智慧者, “wise one”. I follow Bodhi in accepting the MS reading, nāññatra bojjhā tapasā.“Not apart from enlightenment and austerity,
nāññatrindriyasaṁvarā; apart from sense-faculty restraint, not without restraining the sense faculties, Not apart from restraint of the sense faculties,
Nāññatra sabbanissaggā, apart from relinquishing the all, On the definition of the all, see SN 35:23.not without letting go of everything, Not apart from relinquishing all,
sotthiṁ passāmi pāṇinan”ti. I see no safety for living beings.” do I see safety for living creatures.” Do I see any safety for living beings.”
Idamavoca …pe… That is what the Blessed One said… That is what the Buddha said. … This prose fragment is unusual here. Such endings are normally abbreviated in the Pali, although they are retained in the Chinese. This is what the Blessed One said…
