Nandanasutta With Nandana Nandana
Ekamantaṁ ṭhito kho nandano devaputto bhagavantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi: Standing to one side, the godling Nandana addressed the Buddha in verse: Standing to one side, the young deva Nandana addressed the Blessed One in verse:
“Pucchāmi taṁ gotama bhūripañña, “I ask you, Gotama, whose wisdom is vast, “I ask you, Gotama, broad of wisdom—
Anāvaṭaṁ bhagavato ñāṇadassanaṁ; the Blessed One of unhindered knowledge and vision. Unobstructed is the Blessed One’s knowledge and vision:
Kathaṁvidhaṁ sīlavantaṁ vadanti, What sort do they call ethical? What is he like whom they call virtuous?
Kathaṁvidhaṁ paññavantaṁ vadanti; What sort do they call wise? What is he like whom they call wise?
Kathaṁvidho dukkhamaticca iriyati, What sort lives on after transcending suffering? What is he like who has passed beyond suffering?
Kathaṁvidhaṁ devatā pūjayantī”ti. What sort is worshipped by the deities?” What is he like whom the devatās worship?”
“Yo sīlavā paññavā bhāvitatto, “Someone who is ethical, wise, evolved, “One virtuous, wise, of developed mind,
Samāhito jhānarato satīmā; becomes serene, loving absorption, mindful, Concentrated, mindful, enjoying jhāna,
Sabbassa sokā vigatā pahīnā, who’s gotten rid of and given up all sorrows, For whom all sorrows are gone, abandoned,
Khīṇāsavo antimadehadhārī. with defilements ended, they bear their final body. A taint-destroyer bearing his final body:
Tathāvidhaṁ sīlavantaṁ vadanti, That sort they call ethical. It is such a one that they call virtuous,
Tathāvidhaṁ paññavantaṁ vadanti; That sort they call wise. Such a one that they call wise,
Tathāvidho dukkhamaticca iriyati, That sort lives on after transcending suffering. Such a one has passed beyond suffering,
Tathāvidhaṁ devatā pūjayantī”ti. That sort is worshipped by the deities.” Such a one the devatās worship. ”
