7. Addhavagga 7. Overcome

Nāmasutta Name Name

ā€œKiṁsu sabbaṁ addhabhavi, ā€œWhat overcomes everything? ā€œWhat has weighed down everything?

kismā bhiyyo na vijjati; What is it that nothing excels? What is most extensive?

Kissassu ekadhammassa, What is the one thing What is the one thing that has

sabbeva vasamanvagÅ«ā€ti. that has everything under its sway?ā€ All under its control?ā€

ā€œNāmaṁ sabbaṁ addhabhavi, ā€œName overcomes everything. Compare Kauṣītaki Brāhmaṇa 20.2.32, Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa 4.6.5.3.ā€œName has weighed down everything;

nāmā bhiyyo na vijjati; Nothing excels name. This contradicts Chāndogya Upaniį¹£ad 7.1.5, which states, ā€œSurely there is that which excels nameā€ (nāmno vāva bhÅ«yo ’stÄ«ti), which it says is the ā€œspeechā€ that makes the scripture known.Nothing is more extensive than name.

Nāmassa ekadhammassa, Name is the one thing Name is the one thing that has

sabbeva vasamanvagÅ«ā€ti. that has everything under its sway.ā€ The Buddha is refuting the doctrine that ā€œnameā€ (and form) come to an end in the ocean of infinite consciousness (see too DN 15:22.6).All under its control. ā€
