Jaṭāsutta A Tangle Tangle

ā€œAntojaṭā bahijaṭā, ā€œTangled within, tangled without: The ā€œtangleā€ (jaṭā) is the tangled hair or dreadlocks of the Brahmanical jaį¹ila ascetics, as is made clear in SN 7.6 where a dreadlocked brahmin opens with the same verse. The claim is that jaį¹ila ascetics are as tangled in their minds by craving as they are in their hair.ā€œA tangle inside, a tangle outside,

Jaṭāya jaṭitā pajā; these people are tangled in tangles. This generation is entangled in a tangle.

Taṁ taṁ gotama pucchāmi, I ask you this, Gotama: I ask you this, O Gotama,

Ko imaṁ vijaį¹aye jaį¹anā€ti. who can untangle this tangle?ā€ Who can disentangle this tangle?ā€

ā€œSÄ«le patiį¹į¹hāya naro sapaƱƱo, ā€œA wise person grounded in ethics, In a bold literary conceit, the vast compendium of the Visuddhimagga positions itself as an explanation of this single verse.ā€œA man established on virtue, wise,

Cittaṁ paƱƱaƱca bhāvayaṁ; developing the mind and wisdom, Here citta (ā€œmindā€) stands for samādhi or jhāna, which is normally the case in the Suttas on the path (eg. cittasampadā = samādhisampadā, cittabhāvanā = samādhibhāvanā, adhicitta = samādhi, etc.)Developing the mind and wisdom,

ĀtāpÄ« nipako bhikkhu, a keen and alert mendicant—A bhikkhu ardent and discreet:

So imaṁ vijaṭaye jaṭaṁ. they can untangle this tangle. He can disentangle this tangle.

Yesaṁ rāgo ca doso ca, Those in whom greed, hate, and ignorance The previous verse dealt with the one who is practicing; this verse with the perfected one; and the final verse with final extinguishment.ā€œThose for whom lust and hatred

avijjā ca virājitā; have faded away; Along with ignorance have been expunged,

Khīṇāsavā arahanto, the perfected ones with defilements ended—The arahants with taints destroyed:

tesaṁ vijaṭitā jaṭā. they have untangled the tangle. For them the tangle is disentangled.

Yattha nāmaƱca rÅ«paƱca, And where name and form ā€œWhere name-and-form ceases,

asesaṁ uparujjhati; cease with no residue left behind; Stops without remainder,

Paṭighaṁ rūpasaññā ca, and impingement and perception of form: And also impingement and perception of form:

etthesā chijjate jaį¹Äā€ti. it’s here this tangle is cut.ā€ It is here this tangle is cut. ā€
