Sattisutta A Sword A Sword The Sword

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaṁ į¹hitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: As she was standing there, the devatā recited this verse in the Blessed One’s presence: Standing to one side, that deity spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œSattiyā viya omaį¹į¹ho, ā€œAs if struck by a sword, ā€œLike they’re struck by a sword, ā€œAs if smitten by a sword,

įøayhamānova matthake; as if his head were on fire, like their head was on fire, As if his head were on fire,

Kāmarāgappahānāya, a monk should live the wandering life —mindful— a mendicant, mindful, should go forth, To abandon sensual lust.

sato bhikkhu paribbajeā€ti. for the abandoning of sensual passion.ā€ to give up sensual desire.ā€ Here, as often (eg. AN 6.54:22.3), giving up kāmarāga implies attaining the absorptions. It cannot mean relinquishing the ā€œunderlying tendencyā€ or the ā€œfetterā€ to sensual desire, for this occurs only at the third stage of awakening (non-return), whereas the Buddha’s rejoinder urges rather to give up substantialist view, the first stage of awakening, the stream-enterer.A bhikkhu should wander mindfully ā€

ā€œSattiyā viya omaį¹į¹ho, ā€œAs if struck by a sword, ā€œLike they’re struck by a sword, ā€œAs if smitten by a sword,

įøayhamānova matthake; as if his head were on fire, like their head was on fire, As if his head were on fire,

Sakkāyadiį¹į¹hippahānāya, a monk should live the wandering life —mindful— a mendicant, mindful, should go forth, To abandon identity view.

sato bhikkhu paribbajeā€ti. for the abandoning of self-identity.ā€See also: SN 22:1; AN 10:51; Thag 1:39to give up substantialist view.ā€ In some parallels for this verse, the mendicant is urged, rather, to give up desire for rebirth (Thag 1.40:1.2, Thag 20.1:24.1). But SN 2.16:3.2 is the same as here.A bhikkhu should wander mindfully ā€
