Jāgarasutta Awake Awake

Sāvatthinidānaṁ. At Sāvatthī. At Savatthi.

Ekamantaṁ į¹hitā kho sā devatā bhagavato santike imaṁ gāthaṁ abhāsi: Standing to one side, that deity spoke this verse in the Buddha’s presence: Standing to one side, that devatā recited this verse in the presence of the Blessed One:

ā€œKati jāgarataṁ suttā, ā€œHow many sleep among the waking? ā€œHow many are asleep when others are awake?

kati suttesu jāgarā; How many wake among the sleeping? How many are awake when others sleep?

Katibhi rajamādeti, By how many do you gather dust? By how many does one gather dust?

katibhi parisujjhatÄ«ā€ti. By how many are you cleansed?ā€ By how many is one purified?ā€

ā€œPaƱca jāgarataṁ suttā, ā€œFive sleep among the waking. This verse is found in Isibhāsiyāiṁ 29.2, where it is attributed to the Jain Vardhamāna MahāvÄ«ra. His explanation there takes the ā€œfiveā€ as the senses, which for the ā€œwakingā€ sages are ā€œasleepā€ (i.e. restrained), while the unawakened ā€œsleepā€ in ignorance while their ā€œawakened’ senses run riot. The Pali commentaries, on the other hand, take them as the five spiritual faculties on the side of awakening, in contrast with the five hindrances.ā€œFive are asleep when others are awake;

paƱca suttesu jāgarā; Five wake among the sleeping. Five are awake when others sleep.

PaƱcabhi rajamādeti, By five you gather dust. By five things one gathers dust,

paƱcabhi parisujjhatÄ«ā€ti. By five you’re cleansed.ā€ By five things one is purified. ā€
