Pārāyanatthutigāthā The Verses in Praise of “To the Far Shore”Homage to the Way to the Far Shore

Idamavoca bhagavā magadhesu viharanto pāsāṇake cetiye, That is what the Blessed One said when dwelling among the Magadhans at the Pāsāṇaka shrine.This was said by the Buddha while staying in the land of the Magadhans at the Pāsāṇaka Shrine.

paricārakasoḷasānaṁ brāhmaṇānaṁ ajjhiṭṭho puṭṭho puṭṭho pañhaṁ byākāsi. Asked in turn by the sixteen brahmans, he answered their questions.When requested by the sixteen brahmin devotees, he answered their questions one by one.

Ekamekassa cepi pañhassa atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammaṁ paṭipajjeyya, gaccheyyeva jarāmaraṇassa pāraṁ. And if one were to practice the Dhamma in accordance with the Dhamma, knowing the meaning and Dhamma of each of these questions, one would go to the far shore of birth & death.See SN 22:39–42.If you understand the meaning and the teaching of each of these questions, and practice in line with the teaching, you may go right to the far shore of old age and death.

Pāraṅgamanīyā ime dhammāti, tasmā imassa dhammapariyāyassa pārāyananteva adhivacanaṁ. Because these Dhammas lead there, this Dhamma-sequence is called “To the Far Shore.”These teachings are said to lead to the far shore, which is why the name of this exposition of the teaching is “The Way to the Far Shore”.

Ajito tissametteyyo, Ajita, Tissa-metteyya,Ajita, Tissametteyya,

puṇṇako atha mettagū; Puṇṇaka & Mettagū,Puṇṇaka and Mettagū,

Dhotako upasīvo ca, Dhotaka & Upasīva,Dhotaka and Upasiva,

nando ca atha hemako. Nanda & Hemaka,Nanda and then Hemaka,

Todeyya-kappā dubhayo, Todeyya & Kappa,both Todeyya and Kappa,

jatukaṇṇī ca paṇḍito; the wise Jatukaṇṇin,and Jatukaṇṇī the astute,

Bhadrāvudho udayo ca, Bhadrāvudha & Udaya,Bhadrāvudha and Udaya,

posālo cāpi brāhmaṇo; Posāla the brahman,and the brahmin Posāla,

Mogharājā ca medhāvī, Mogharāja the intelligent,Mogharāja the intelligent,

piṅgiyo ca mahāisi. and Piṅgiya the great seer:and Piṅgiya the great seer:

Ete buddhaṁ upāgacchuṁ, They went to the Awakened One,they approached the Buddha,

sampannacaraṇaṁ isiṁ; consummate in conduct, the seer.the seer of consummate conduct.

Pucchantā nipuṇe pañhe, asking subtle questions,Asking their subtle questions,

buddhaseṭṭhaṁ upāgamuṁ. they went to the excellent Awakened One.they came to the most excellent Buddha.

Tesaṁ buddho pabyākāsi, The Awakened One, when asked their questions,The Buddha answered their questions

pañhe puṭṭho yathātathaṁ; answered in line with the truth.in accordance with truth.

Pañhānaṁ veyyākaraṇena, By answering their questions, the sageThe sage satisfied the brahmins

tosesi brāhmaṇe muni. delighted the brahmans.with his answers to their questions.

Te tositā cakkhumatā, They, delighted by the One with Eyes—Those who were satisfied by the Clear-eyed One,

buddhenādiccabandhunā; Awakened, Kinsman of the Sun—the Buddha, Kinsman of the Sun,

Brahmacariyamacariṁsu, lived the holy lifeled the spiritual life in his presence,

varapaññassa santike. in the presence of the one of foremost discernment.the one of such outstanding wisdom.

Ekamekassa pañhassa, Whoever would practiceIf you practice in accordance

yathā buddhena desitaṁ; as the Awakened One taughtwith each of these questions

Tathā yo paṭipajjeyya, concerning each of these questions,as taught by the Buddha,

gacche pāraṁ apārato. would go from the near shore to the far—you’ll go from the near shore to the far.

Apārā pāraṁ gaccheyya, would go from the near shore to the farDeveloping the supreme path,

bhāvento maggamuttamaṁ; developing the path supreme.you’ll go from the near shore to the far.

Maggo so pāraṁ gamanāya, The path is for going beyond,This path is for going to the far shore;

tasmā pārāyanaṁ iti. and so it’s called “To the Far Shore.”that’s why it’s called “The Way to the Far Shore”.
