ā€œJiṇṇohamasmi abalo vÄ«tavaṇṇo, ā€œI’m old & weak, my complexion dull,ā€œI am old, feeble, and pallid,ā€

(iccāyasmā piį¹…giyo) (Piį¹…giya)said Venerable Piį¹…giya,

Nettā na suddhā savanaṁ na phāsu; I’ve blurry eyes and trouble hearingā€”ā€œmy eyes unclear, my hearing faint—

Māhaṁ nassaṁ momuho antarāva, but may I not perish while still deluded, confused!don’t let me perish while still confused.

Ācikkha dhammaṁ yamahaṁ vijaƱƱaṁ; Teach me the Dhamma so that I may knowExplain the teaching so that I may understand

Jātijarāya idha vippahānaį¹ā€. the abandoning here of birth & aging.ā€the giving up of rebirth and old age here.ā€

ā€œDisvāna rÅ«pesu vihaƱƱamāne, ā€œSeeing people suffering on account of their bodiesā€”ā€œSeeing them being harmed on account of forms,ā€

(piį¹…giyāti bhagavā) (the Buddha)replied the Buddha,

Ruppanti rÅ«pesu janā pamattā; heedless people are afflicted on account of their bodiesā€”ā€œthose negligent folk are inflicted on account of forms—Text puns rupa (ā€œformā€) with ruppati (ā€œinflictsā€), as per SN 22.79:2.1.

Tasmā tuvaṁ piį¹…giya appamatto, then heedful, Piį¹…giya,therefore, Piį¹…giya, being diligent,

Jahassu rÅ«paṁ apunabbhavāyaā€. let go of the body for the sake of no further becoming.ā€give up form so as not to be reborn.ā€

Uddhaṁ adho dasa disā imāyo; above & below —these ten directions—below, and above: in these ten directions

Na tuyhaṁ adiį¹­į¹­haṁ asutaṁ amutaṁ, there is nothing in the world unseen, unheard,there’s nothing at all in the world

Atho aviƱƱātaṁ kiƱcanamatthi loke; unsensed, uncognized by you.that you’ve not seen, heard, thought, or cognized.
