ā€œOkaƱjahaṁ taṇhacchidaṁ anejaṁ, ā€œI entreat the one who has abandoned home—cutting through craving, unperturbed;ā€œI beseech you, the bastion-leaver, the craving-cutter, the imperturbable,ā€

(iccāyasmā bhadrāvudho) (Bhadrāvudha)said Venerable Bhadrāvudha,

NandiƱjahaṁ oghatiṇṇaṁ vimuttaṁ; abandoned delight—crossed over the flood, released;ā€œthe delight-leaver, the flood-crosser, the freed,

KappaƱjahaṁ abhiyāce sumedhaṁ, abandoned theory—very intelligent:the formulation-leaver, the intelligent.

Sutvāna nāgassa apanamissanti ito. Having heard the Nāga, they will leave—Different people have gathered from across the nations

Nānājanā janapadehi saį¹…gatā, the many gathered from many lands, hero,wishing to hear your word, O hero.

Tava vÄ«ra vākyaṁ abhikaį¹…khamānā; in hopes of your words.After hearing the spiritual giant they will depart from here.

Tesaṁ tuvaṁ sādhu viyākarohi, So tell them, please,Please, sage, answer them clearly,

Tathā hi te vidito esa dhammoā€. how this Dhamma has been known to you.ā€for truly you understand this matter.ā€

ā€œÄ€dānataṇhaṁ vinayetha sabbaṁ, ā€œSubdue craving & grasping—allā€”ā€œDispel all craving for attachments,ā€

(bhadrāvudhāti bhagavā (the Buddha)replied the Buddha,

Yaṁ yañhi lokasmimupādiyanti, For whatever people cling to in the world,For whatever a personage grasps in the world,

Teneva māro anveti jantuṁ. it’s through that that Māra pursues them.Māra pursues them right there.

Tasmā pajānaṁ na upādiyetha, So a monk, mindful, should cling to nothingSo let a mindful mendicant who understands

Bhikkhu sato kiñcanaṁ sabbaloke; in all the world, every world,not grasp anything in all the world,

Ādānasatte iti pekkhamāno, seeing these people entangled in graspingobserving that, in clinging to attachments, Read (with Niddesa) as accusative plural. Norman reads ādānasatte as locative singular, but compare the similar construction at Thag 19.1:20.3, where the former part of the line is accusative.

Pajaṁ imaṁ maccudheyye visattanā€ti. as entangled in Death’s realm.ā€See also: MN 26; MN 49; SN 4:19; SN 4:21; SN 35:115; SN 35:189; SN 35:199.these people cling to the domain of death.ā€
