Kappamāṇavapucchā Kappa’s QuestionThe Questions of Kappa

ā€œMajjhe sarasmiṁ tiį¹­į¹­hataṁ, ā€œFor one stranded in the middle of the lake,ā€œFor those overwhelmed by old age and death,ā€

(iccāyasmā kappo) (Kappa)said Venerable Kappa,

Oghe jāte mahabbhaye; in the flood of great danger—birthā€”ā€œstuck mid-stream

Jarāmaccuparetānaṁ, overwhelmed with aging & death:as the terrifying flood arises,

Dīpaṁ pabrūhi mārisa; Tell me the island, dear sir,tell me an island, good fellow.

TvaƱca me dīpamakkhāhi, and show me the islandExplain to me an island

Yathāyidaṁ nāparaṁ siyÄā€. so that this may not happen again.ā€so this may occur no further.ā€

(kappāti bhagavā) (the Buddha)replied the Buddha,

Jarāmaccuparetānaṁ, overwhelmed with aging & death,as the terrifying flood arises,

Dīpaṁ pabrūmi kappa te. Kappa, I will tell you the island.On the Dhamma as an island, see DN 16.I shall tell you an island, Kappa.

Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ, Having nothing, free of clinging:Having nothing, taking nothing:

etaṁ dīpaṁ anāparaṁ; That is the island, there is no other.this is the island with nothing further.

Nibbānaṁ iti naṁ brÅ«mi, That’s unbinding, I tell you,I call it extinguishment,

jarāmaccuparikkhayaṁ. the total ending of aging & death.the ending of old age and death.

EtadaƱƱāya ye satā, Those knowing this, mindful,Those who have fully understood this, mindful,

Diṭṭhadhammābhinibbutā; fully unbound in the here-&-now,are quenched in this very life.

Na te māravasānugā, don’t come under Māra’s sway,On Māra’s sway, see SN 4:19, SN 35:115, SN 35:189, and SN 35:199.They don’t fall under Māra’s sway,

Na te mārassa paddhagÅ«ā€ti. don’t serve as Māra’s servants.ā€nor are they his footmen.ā€
