Pabbajjāsutta The Going ForthGoing Forth
“Pabbajjaṁ kittayissāmi, “I will praise the Going Forth,“I shall extol going forth
yathā pabbaji cakkhumā; how he went forth, the One with Eyes,with the example of the Clear-eyed One,
Yathā vīmaṁsamāno so, how he reasoned,the course of inquiry that led to
pabbajjaṁ samarocayi. and chose the Going Forth.his choice to go forth.
Sambādhoyaṁ gharāvāso, Household life is confining,‘This life at home is cramped,
rajassāyatanaṁ iti; a realm of dust,a realm of dirt.’
Abbhokāsova pabbajjā, while going forth is the open air,‘The life of one gone forth is like an open space.’
iti disvāna pabbaji. seeing this, he went forth.Seeing this, he went forth.
Pabbajitvāna kāyena, On going forth,Having gone forth, he shunned
pāpakammaṁ vivajjayi; he avoided evil deeds in body.bad deeds of body.
Vacīduccaritaṁ hitvā, Abandoning verbal misconduct,And leaving verbal misconduct behind,
ājīvaṁ parisodhayi. he purified his livelihood.he purified his livelihood.
Agamā rājagahaṁ buddho, Then he, the Buddha, went to Rājagaha,The Buddha went to Rājagaha,
magadhānaṁ giribbajaṁ; the mountain fortress of the Magadhans,the Mountainfold of the Magadhans.
Piṇḍāya abhihāresi, and wandered for alms,He betook himself for alms,
ākiṇṇavaralakkhaṇo”. teeming with the foremost marks.”replete with excellent marks.
Tamaddasā bimbisāro, King Bimbisāra saw him,Bimbisāra saw him This is the only passage in the suttas where Bimbisāra appears in person. He does, however, feature quite frequently in the Vinaya.
pāsādasmiṁ patiṭṭhito; standing in his palace,while standing atop his longhouse.
Disvā lakkhaṇasampannaṁ, and on seeing him, consummate in marks,Noticing that he was endowed with marks,
imamatthaṁ abhāsatha. said this:he said the following:
“Imaṁ bhonto nisāmetha, “Look at this one, sirs.‘Pay heed, sirs, to this one,
abhirūpo brahā suci; How handsome, stately, pure!handsome, majestic, radiant; Suci here refers to his appearance, as agreed by the commentary, so “pure” is not very useful.
Caraṇena ca sampanno, How consummate his demeanor!accomplished in deportment,
yugamattañca pekkhati. looking only a plow-length before him,he looks just a plough’s length in front.
Okkhittacakkhu satimā, Mindful, his eyes downcast.Eyes downcast, mindful,
nāyaṁ nīcakulāmiva; This one’s not like one from a lowly lineage:unlike one from a low family.
Rājadūtābhidhāvantu, Have the royal messengers hurryLet the king’s messengers run out,
kuhiṁ bhikkhu gamissati”. to see where this monk will go.”and find where the mendicant will go.’
Te pesitā rājadūtā, They—the messengers dispatched—The messengers sent out
piṭṭhito anubandhisuṁ; followed behind him.followed right behind, thinking
Kuhiṁ gamissati bhikkhu, Where will this monk go?‘Where will the mendicant go?
kattha vāso bhavissati. Where will his dwelling place be?Where shall he find a place to stay?’
Sapadānaṁ caramāno, As he went from house to house—Wandering indiscriminately for alms,
guttadvāro susaṁvuto; well-restrained, his sense-doors guarded,sense doors guarded and well restrained,
Khippaṁ pattaṁ apūresi, his bowl filled quickly,aware and mindful,
sampajāno paṭissato. alert & mindful.his bowl was quickly filled.
Piṇḍacāraṁ caritvāna, Then he, the sage, completing his alms round,Having wandered for alms,
Nikkhamma nagarā muni; left the city,the sage left the city.
Paṇḍavaṁ abhihāresi, headed for Mount Paṇḍava.He betook himself to Mount Paṇḍava,
Ettha vāso bhavissati. That’s where his dwelling will be.thinking, ‘Here is the place I shall stay.’
Disvāna vāsūpagataṁ, Seeing him go to his dwelling place,Seeing that he had arrived at a place to stay,
Tayo dūtā upāvisuṁ; three messengers sat down,the messengers withdrew nearby, Reading tato.
Tesu ekova āgantvā, while one returnedbut one of them returned
Rājino paṭivedayi. to tell the king.to inform the king.
“Esa bhikkhu mahārāja, “That monk, your majesty,‘Great king, the mendicant
Paṇḍavassa puratthato; on the flank of Paṇḍava,is on the east flank of Mount Paṇḍava.
Nisinno byagghusabhova, sits like a tiger, a bull,There he sits, like a tiger or a bull,
Sīhova girigabbhare”. a lion in a mountain cleft.”like a lion in a mountain cave.’
Sutvāna dūtavacanaṁ, Hearing the messenger’s words,Hearing the messenger’s report,
Bhaddayānena khattiyo; the noble-warrior king, by royal coach,the aristocrat set out
Taramānarūpo niyyāsi, straight away set out,hurriedly in his fine chariot
Yena paṇḍavapabbato. for Mount Paṇḍava.toward Mount Paṇḍava.
Sa yānabhūmiṁ yāyitvā, Going as far as the coach would go,He went as far as vehicles could go,
Yānā oruyha khattiyo; the noble-warrior king got down from the coach,then dismounted from his chariot,
Pattiko upasaṅkamma, went up on foot,approached on foot,
Āsajja naṁ upāvisi. and on arrival sat down.and reaching him, drew near.
Nisajja rājā sammodi, Sitting there,Seated, the king greeted him
Kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ tato; he exchanged courteous greetings,and made polite conversation.
Kathaṁ so vītisāretvā, and after giving friendly greetings,When the courtesies were over,
Imamatthaṁ abhāsatha. said this:he said the following:
“Yuvā ca daharo cāsi, “Young you are, and youthful,‘You are young, just a youth,
Paṭhamuppattiko susu; in the first stage of youth,a lad in the prime of life.
Vaṇṇārohena sampanno, consummate in stature & coloringYou are endowed with beauty and stature,
Jātimā viya khattiyo. like a noble-warrior by birth.like an aristocrat of good birth
Sobhayanto anīkaggaṁ, You would look gloriousin glory at the army’s head,
Nāgasaṅghapurakkhato; in the vanguard of an army, arrayed with an elephant squadron.surrounded by a troop of elephants.
Dadāmi bhoge bhuñjassu, I offer you wealth: Enjoy it.I offer you pleasures—enjoy them! Cp. Ja 542:176.3.
Jātiṁ akkhāhi pucchito”. I ask your birth: Inform me.”But please tell me of your birth.’
“Ujuṁ janapado rāja, “Straight ahead, your majesty,‘Up north, O King,
Himavantassa passato; by the foothills of the Himalayas,on the slopes of the Himalayas,
Dhanaviriyena sampanno, is a country consummate in energy & wealth,full of wealth and strength, lies the land
Kosalesu niketino. inhabited by Kosalans:of one whose abode is among the Kosalans.
Ādiccā nāma gottena, Solar by clan,Their clan is named for the Sun, Buddhist tradition holds that the Buddha’s solar ancestry was shared with Bimbisāra.
Sākiyā nāma jātiyā; Sakyans by birth.they are Sakyans by birth.
Tamhā kulā pabbajitomhi, From that lineage I have gone forth,I have gone forth from that family—
Na kāme abhipatthayaṁ. but not in hope of sensuality.I do not yearn for sensual pleasure.
Kāmesvādīnavaṁ disvā, Seeing the danger in sensualitySeeing the danger in sensual pleasures,
Nekkhammaṁ daṭṭhu khemato; —and renunciation as rest—seeing renunciation as sanctuary,
Padhānāya gamissāmi, I go to strive.I shall go on to strive;
Ettha me rañjatī mano”ti. That’s where my heart delights.”that is where my mind delights.’”
