“Kacci abhiṇhasaṁvāsā, “From living with him often“Does familiarity breed contempt,

nāvajānāsi paṇḍitaṁ; do you not despise the wise man?even for the man of wisdom?

Ukkādhāro manussānaṁ, Is the one who holds up the torch for human beingsDo you honor he who holds aloft

kacci apacito tayā”. honored by you?”the torch for all humanity?”

“Nāhaṁ abhiṇhasaṁvāsā, “From living with him often“Familiarity breeds no contempt

avajānāmi paṇḍitaṁ; I don’t despise the wise man.for the man of wisdom.

Ukkādhāro manussānaṁ, The one who holds up the torch for human beingsI always honor he who holds aloft

niccaṁ apacito mayā”. is honored by me.”the torch for all humanity.”

“Pañca kāmaguṇe hitvā, “Abandoning the five strings of sensuality,“One who’s given up the five sensual stimulations,

piyarūpe manorame; endearing, charming,so pleasing and delightful,

Saddhāya gharā nikkhamma, going forth from home through conviction,and who’s left the home life out of faith—

dukkhassantakaro bhava. be one who puts an end to suffering & stress.let them make an end to suffering!

Mitte bhajassu kalyāṇe, Cultivate admirable friendsMix with spiritual friends,

pantañca sayanāsanaṁ; and an isolated dwelling,stay in remote lodgings,

Vivittaṁ appanigghosaṁ, secluded, with next-to-no noise.secluded and quiet,

mattaññū hohi bhojane. Know moderation in eating.and eat in moderation.

Cīvare piṇḍapāte ca, Robe, alms-food,Robes, almsfood,

paccaye sayanāsane; requisites, dwellings:requisites and lodgings:

Etesu taṇhaṁ mākāsi, don’t create craving for these.don’t crave such things;

mā lokaṁ punarāgami. Don’t be one who returns to the world.don’t come back to this world again.

Saṁvuto pātimokkhasmiṁ, Restrained in the PāṭimokkhaBe restrained in the monastic code

indriyesu ca pañcasu; and the five faculties,and the five sense faculties.

Sati kāyagatā tyatthu, have mindfulness immersed in the body,With mindfulness immersed in the body,

nibbidābahulo bhava. be one who’s cultivated disenchantment.be full of disillusionment.

Nimittaṁ parivajjehi, Avoid the theme of beauty,Turn away from the sign

subhaṁ rāgūpasañhitaṁ; connected with passion.that’s attractive, provoking lust.

Asubhāya cittaṁ bhāvehi, Develop the mind in the unattractive—With mind unified and serene,

ekaggaṁ susamāhitaṁ. gathered into one,1 well-centered.Ek’agga, reading agga in the sense of ‘gathering place.’meditate on the ugly aspects of the body.

Animittañca bhāvehi, Develop the themeless.2On the themeless concentration, see MN 121 and SN 41:7.Meditate on the signless,

Mānānusayamujjaha; Give up obsession with conceit.give up the tendency to conceit;

Tato mānābhisamayā, Then, from having broken through conceit,and when you comprehend conceit,

Upasanto carissatī”ti. you will go about, stilled.”you will live at peace.”

Itthaṁ sudaṁ bhagavā āyasmantaṁ rāhulaṁ imāhi gāthāhi abhiṇhaṁ ovadatīti. In this way, the Blessed One often instructed Ven. Rāhula3 with these verses.At AN 1:148 (1:209) the Buddha cites Ven. Rāhula, his son, as being foremost among the monks in his desire for training.That is how the Buddha regularly advised Venerable Rāhula with these verses.
