Uṭṭhahatha nisīdatha, Get up! Sit up!Get up and meditate!
ko attho supitena vo; What’s your need for sleep?What’s the point in your sleeping?
Āturānañhi kā niddā, And what sleep is there for the afflicted,How can the afflicted slumber
sallaviddhāna ruppataṁ. pierced by the arrow, oppressed?when inflicted by an arrow strike?
Uṭṭhahatha nisīdatha, Get up! Sit up!Get up and meditate!
Daḷhaṁ sikkhatha santiyā; Train firmly for the sake of peace.Train hard for peace!
Mā vo pamatte viññāya, Don’t let the king of death, —seeing you heedless—The King of Death has caught you heedless—
Maccurājā amohayittha vasānuge. deceive you, bring you under his sway.don’t let him fool you under his sway.
Yāya devā manussā ca, To which human & heavenly beingsNeedy gods and humans
sitā tiṭṭhanti atthikā; remain, desiring, tied,are held back by clinging:
Tarathetaṁ visattikaṁ, cross over this attachment—get over it.
khaṇo vo mā upaccagā; don’t let the moment pass by.Don’t let the moment pass you by.
Khaṇātītā hi socanti, Those for whom the moment is pastFor if you miss your moment
nirayamhi samappitā. grieve, consigned to hell.you’ll grieve when sent to hell.
Pamādo rajo pamādo, Heedlessness is dust, dustNegligence is always dust;
Pamādānupatito rajo; comes from heedlessness, has heedlessness on its heels.dust follows right behind negligence.
Appamādena vijjāya, Through heedfulness & clear knowingThrough diligence and knowledge,
