Hirisutta ShameConscientious Companionship
Hiriṁ tarantaṁ vijigucchamānaṁ, One who, flouting, despising a sense of shame,Flouting conscience, loathing it,
Tavāhamasmi iti bhāsamānaṁ; saying, “I am your friend,”saying “I’m on your side”,
Sayhāni kammāni anādiyantaṁ, but not grasping what he could do [to help]:but not following up in deeds—
Neso mamanti iti naṁ vijaññā. Know him as “Not one of mine.”know they’re not on your side.
Ananvayaṁ piyaṁ vācaṁ, One who, among friends,Some say nice things to their friends
yo mittesu pakubbati; speaks endearing words to which he doesn’t conform,without following it up.
Akarontaṁ bhāsamānaṁ, the wise recognizeThe wise will recognize
parijānanti paṇḍitā. as speaking without doing.one who talks without doing.
Na so mitto yo sadā appamatto, He’s not a friend who’s always wary,No true friend relentlessly
Bhedāsaṅkī randhamevānupassī; suspecting a split, focusing just on your weakness.suspects betrayal, looking for fault.
Yasmiñca seti urasīva putto, But him on whom you can depend, like a child on its parent’s breast:One on whom you rest, like a child on the breast,
Sa ve mitto yo parehi abhejjo. That’s a true friend whom others can’t split from you.is a true friend, not split from you by others.
Pāmujjakaraṇaṁ ṭhānaṁ, The conditions that make for joy,One whose reward is the fruit
pasaṁsāvahanaṁ sukhaṁ; the bliss that brings praise:of bearing the burden of service
Phalānisaṁso bhāveti, the fruits & rewards developdevelops a happy state,
vahanto porisaṁ dhuraṁ. for one carrying the manly burden.producing joy and attracting praise.
Pavivekarasaṁ pitvā, Drinking the savor of seclusion,One who has drunk the nectar of seclusion
Rasaṁ upasamassa ca; the savor of calm,and the nectar of peace,
Niddaro hoti nippāpo, one is freed from evil, devoid of distress,free of stress, free of evil,
Dhammapītirasaṁ pivanti. refreshed with the savor of rapture in the Dhamma.1This last verse corresponds to Dhp 205.drinks the joyous nectar of Dhamma.
