Buddhaį¹ dhammassÄmiį¹ vÄ«tataį¹haį¹; awakened, lord of the Dhamma, free of craving,āthe Buddha, master of the teaching, free of craving,
Dvipaduttamaį¹ sÄrathÄ«naį¹ pavaraį¹, supreme among two-legged beings, best of charioteers:best of men, excellent charioteer, please tell me this:
Kati loke samaį¹Ä tadiį¹
gha brÅ«hiā. How many contemplatives are there in the world? Please tell me.āhow many ascetics are there in the world?ā
āCaturo samaį¹Ä na paƱcamatthi, āFour contemplatives, there is no fifth.āThere are four ascetics, not a fifth.ā
(cundÄti bhagavÄ) (the Buddha)said the Buddha to Cunda,
Te te Ävikaromi sakkhipuį¹į¹ho; Being asked in person, I disclose them to you:āBeing asked to bear witness, I will explain them to you: Sakkhipuį¹į¹ho is only elsewhere used in the context of being asked to bear witness in court. I think the context is relevant here, as the Buddha is offering personal testimony on ājudgingā others.
Maggajino maggadesako ca, the path-victor, the path-explainer,the path-victor, the path-teacher,
Magge jÄ«vati yo ca maggadÅ«sÄ«ā. one who lives by the path, and the path-corrupter.āthe path-liver, and the path-wrecker.ā
āKaį¹ maggajinaį¹ vadanti buddhÄ, āWhom do the awakened call the path-victor?āWho is a path-victor according to the Buddhas?ā
(iti cundo kammÄraputto) (Cunda)said Cunda the smith,
MaggakkhÄyÄ« kathaį¹ atulyo hoti; How is one unequaled in pointing out the path?āand how is one an unequaled explainer of the path?
Magge jÄ«vati me brÅ«hi puį¹į¹ho, When asked, tell me about the one who lives by the path.Tell me when asked about one who lives the path,
Atha me Ävikarohi maggadÅ«siį¹ā. Then disclose the path-corrupter to me.āthen declare the path-wrecker.ā
āYo tiį¹į¹akathaį¹
katho visallo, āWhoever, de-arrowed, has crossed over doubt,āRid of indecision, free of thorns,
NibbÄnÄbhirato anÄnugiddho; is refreshed in unbinding, devoid of greed,delighting in extinguishment, not fawning,
Lokassa sadevakassa netÄ, a guide to the world along with its devas:a guide for the world with its gods.
TÄdiį¹ maggajinaį¹ vadanti buddhÄ. The awakened call such a person path-victor.The Buddhas say one such is victor of the path.
Paramaį¹ paramanti yodha ƱatvÄ, Whoever here knowing the foremost as foremost,Knowing the ultimate as ultimate,
AkkhÄti vibhajate idheva dhammaį¹; who points out, who analyzes the Dhamma right here,they explain and analyze the teaching right here.
Taį¹ kaį¹
khachidaį¹ muniį¹ anejaį¹, he, the cutter of doubt, the sage unperturbed,That sage unstirred, with doubt cut off,
Dutiyaį¹ bhikkhunamÄhu maggadesiį¹. is called the second of monks: path-explainer.is the second mendicant, I say, the teacher of the path.
Yo dhammapade sudesite, Whoever, in the well-explained Dhamma-way,Living restrained and mindful on the path
Magge jÄ«vati saƱƱato satÄ«mÄ; lives by the path, restrained, mindful,of the well-taught passage of teaching, Norman and Bodhi both read pada as āwayā, but it surely means āpassageā as eg. AN 4.191:1.7.
AnavajjapadÄni sevamÄno, partaking of blameless ways,cultivating blameless states,
Tatiyaį¹ bhikkhunamÄhu maggajÄ«viį¹. is called the third of monks: with the path as his life.is the third mendicant, I say, the path-liver.
Chadanaį¹ katvÄna subbatÄnaį¹, Making a faƧade of good practices,Dressed like one true to their vows,
PakkhandÄ« kuladÅ«sako pagabbho; brash, reckless, a corrupter of families,A ācorrupter of familiesā is a monk who wins a familyās affection by doing favors for them that arenāt proper for a monk to do, pulling their faith away from those who actually keep the Dhamma and Vinaya. ghÄdisesa 13.pushy, rude, a corrupter of families,
MÄyÄvÄ« asaƱƱato palÄpo, idle, deceitful, unrestrained,devious, unrestrained, chaff,
PatirÅ«pena caraį¹ sa maggadÅ«sÄ«. & going about as a counterfeit: he is a path-corrupter.the path-wreckerās life is a sham.
Ete ca paį¹ivijjhi yo gahaį¹į¹ho, And when any householder understands these,A layperson who gets this,
SutavÄ ariyasÄvako sapaƱƱo; āan instructed disciple of the noble ones, discerningāa learned, wise noble disciple,
Sabbe netÄdisÄti ƱatvÄ, knowing, āNot all are like that one,āāThat oneā refers back to the path-corrupter described in the preceding verse.knows that āThey are not all like that oneā.
Iti disvÄ na hÄpeti tassa saddhÄ; seeing one like that doesnāt kill his conviction.So when they see them they donāt lose their faith.
Kathaį¹ hi duį¹į¹hena asampaduį¹į¹haį¹, For how would one equate the corrupt with the uncorrupt,For how could one equate themā
Suddhaį¹ asuddhena samaį¹ kareyyÄāti. the impure with the pure?āthe corrupt with the uncorrupt, the pure with the impure?ā
