6. Mudulakkhaṇajātaka Queen Sweetheart: a past life story
“Ekā icchā pure āsi, One wish I had in the past, An ascetic desires the queen, but when he gains her he finds that his list of desires does not shrink but grows.
aladdhā mudulakkhaṇaṁ; before I won Queen Sweetheart.
Yato laddhā aḷārakkhī, But when I won the moon-eyed lady, Aḷārakkhī is unique. More commonly we find aḷārapamha, where, as here aḷāra is glossed as visāla, “wide”. Compare Sanskrit arāḍa, glossed with ucchritaśṛṅga, “high-horned”. I think it describes wide-open, expressive eyes (akkhī) with eyebrows (pamha) that are high and curved like horns.
icchā icchaṁ vijāyathā”ti. wish upon wish was born. Vijāyatha is reflexive third singular aorist, glossed with janesi.
Mudulakkhaṇajātakaṁ chaṭṭhaṁ.
