6. KaƱcanakkhandhajātaka The Mass of Gold: a past life story

ā€œYo pahaį¹­į¹­hena cittena, He whose heart is well-forged, A man discovers a large lump of gold, but must break it into four to make it useful. | The verse is almost identical with the previous, only differing in the key term.

pahaį¹­į¹­hamanaso naro; a man of cheerful mind, As with the previous verse, the key term pahaį¹­į¹­ha rests on both the story and a dual meaning. Pahaį¹­į¹­ha normally has the sense ā€œcheerfulā€ (√haṁs), but the commentary connects it rather with gold that has been forged (√ghaṁs) until it is luminous and radiant.

Bhāveti kusalaṁ dhammaṁ, develops skillful qualities

yogakkhemassa pattiyā; for the sake of sanctuary from the yoke.

Pāpuṇe anupubbena, Gradually he would attain

sabbasaṁyojanakkhayanā€ti. the ending of all fetters.

Kañcanakkhandhajātakaṁ chaṭṭhaṁ.
