4. Ājaññajātaka The Thoroughbred: a past life story
“Yadā yadā yattha yadā, Whenever whenever, wherever whenever, Similar to the previous story, a warhorse declares its determination to go on.
yattha yattha yadā yadā; wherever wherever, whenever whenever:
Ājañño kurute vegaṁ, the thoroughbred drives onward,
hāyanti tattha vāḷavā”ti. while the geldings fade right there. Vāḷavā is masculine nominative plural (commentary: khaḷuṅkassā hāyanti). It is a secondary derivation, glossed with vaḷavasaṅkhātā, “reckoned as a mare”; cf. Sanskrit vāḍaba.
