Tikanipāta The Book of the Threes

PaƱcamavagga Chapter Five

Upaparikkhasutta Examination

Vuttañhetaṁ bhagavatā vuttamarahatāti me sutaṁ: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.

ā€œTathā tathā, bhikkhave, bhikkhu upaparikkheyya yathā yathāssa upaparikkhato bahiddhā cassa viññāṇaṁ avikkhittaṁ avisaį¹aṁ ajjhattaṁ asaṇṭhitaṁ anupādāya na paritasseyya. ā€œA mendicant should examine in whatever way such that, while examining, consciousness would neither be scattered nor diffused externally, nor stuck internally, and they would not be anxious because of grasping.

Bahiddhā, bhikkhave, viññāṇe avikkhitte avisaį¹e sati ajjhattaṁ asaṇṭhite anupādāya aparitassato āyatiṁ jātijarāmaraṇadukkhasamudayasambhavo na hotÄ«ā€ti. When consciousness is neither scattered nor diffused externally, nor stuck internally, and they are not anxious because of grasping, there is no coming to be of the origin of suffering—of rebirth, old age, and death in the future.ā€

Etamatthaṁ bhagavā avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.

Tatthetaṁ iti vuccati: On this it is said:

ā€œSattasaį¹…gappahÄ«nassa, ā€œFor one who has given up seven chains,

netticchinnassa bhikkhuno; a mendicant who has cut the cord,

Vikkhīṇo jātisaṁsāro, transmigration through births is finished,

natthi tassa punabbhavoā€ti. there’ll be no more future lives for them.ā€

Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatā, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.

Pañcamaṁ.
