āTayome, bhikkhave, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. āMendicants, these three individuals are found in the world.
Katame tayo? What three?
Avuį¹į¹hikasamo, padesavassÄ«, sabbatthÄbhivassÄ«. One like a rainless cloud, one who rains locally, one who rains all over.
KathaƱca, bhikkhave, puggalo avuį¹į¹hikasamo hoti? And how is an individual like a rainless cloud?
Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo sabbesaƱƱeva na dÄtÄ hoti, samaį¹abrÄhmaį¹akapaį¹addhikavanibbakayÄcakÄnaį¹ annaį¹ pÄnaį¹ vatthaį¹ yÄnaį¹ mÄlÄgandhavilepanaį¹ seyyÄvasathapadÄ«peyyaį¹. Itās when an individual doesnāt give to anyone at allāwhether ascetics and brahmins, paupers, vagrants, supplicants, or beggarsāsuch things as food, drink, clothing, vehicles; garlands, fragrance, and makeup; and bed, house, and lighting.
Evaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo avuį¹į¹hikasamo hoti. Thatās how an individual is like a rainless cloud.

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo ekaccÄnaį¹ dÄtÄ hoti, ekaccÄnaį¹ na dÄtÄ hoti samaį¹abrÄhmaį¹akapaį¹addhikavanibbakayÄcakÄnaį¹ annaį¹ pÄnaį¹ vatthaį¹ yÄnaį¹ mÄlÄgandhavilepanaį¹ seyyÄvasathapadÄ«peyyaį¹. āNa samaį¹e na brÄhmaį¹e, āThey donāt share the food and drink
Na kapaį¹addhikavanibbake; they have acquired
LaddhÄna saį¹vibhÄjeti, with ascetics or brahmins,
Annaį¹ pÄnaƱca bhojanaį¹; with paupers, vagrants, or supplicants.
Taį¹ ve avuį¹į¹hikasamoti, Theyāre like a rainless cloud,
Ähu naį¹ purisÄdhamaį¹. they say, the meanest of men.
EkaccÄnaį¹ na dadÄti, They donāt give to some,
ekaccÄnaį¹ pavecchati; to some they provide.
Taį¹ ve padesavassÄ«ti, They rain locally,
Ähu medhÄvino janÄ. so say the wise.
SubhikkhavÄco puriso, Compassionate for all beings,
sabbabhÅ«tÄnukampako; that person distributes
ÄmodamÄno pakireti, abundant food upon request,
detha dethÄti bhÄsati. saying, āGive! Give!ā
YathÄpi megho thanayitvÄ, The rain cloud rains forth,
gajjayitvÄ pavassati; having thundered and roared,
Thalaį¹ ninnaƱca pÅ«reti, drenching the earth with water,
abhisandantova vÄrinÄ. soaking the uplands and valleys.
Evamevaį¹ idhekacco, Even so, such an individual,
puggalo hoti tÄdiso; having accumulated wealth
Dhammena saį¹haritvÄna, by legitimate means,
uį¹į¹hÄnÄdhigataį¹ dhanaį¹; through their own hard work,
Tappeti annapÄnena, rightly satisfies with food and drink
sammÄ patte vanibbakeāti. those who have become supplicants.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard.
