Itivuttaka 1 So It Was Said 1
EkakanipÄta The Book of the Ones
Paį¹hamavagga Chapter One
Lobhasutta Greed
VuttaƱhetaį¹ bhagavatÄ vuttamarahatÄti me sutaį¹: This was said by the Buddha, the Perfected One: that is what I heard.
āEkadhammaį¹, bhikkhave, pajahatha; āMendicants, give up one thing
ahaį¹ vo pÄį¹ibhogo anÄgÄmitÄya. and I guarantee you non-return.
Katamaį¹ ekadhammaį¹? What one thing?
Lobhaį¹, bhikkhave, ekadhammaį¹ pajahatha; Greed is the one thing. Give it up,
ahaį¹ vo pÄį¹ibhogo anÄgÄmitÄyÄāti. and I guarantee you non-return.ā
Etamatthaį¹ bhagavÄ avoca. The Buddha spoke this matter.
Tatthetaį¹ iti vuccati: On this it is said:
āYena lobhena luddhÄse, āWhen overcome by greed
sattÄ gacchanti duggatiį¹; beings go to a bad place.
Taį¹ lobhaį¹ sammadaƱƱÄya, Having rightly understood that greed,
pajahanti vipassino; the discerning give it up.
PahÄya na punÄyanti, Once theyāve given it up,
imaį¹ lokaį¹ kudÄcananāti. they never return to this world.ā
Ayampi attho vutto bhagavatÄ, iti me sutanti. This too is a matter that was spoken by the Blessed One: that is what I heard. We find the same tag in Ud 1.10, except with udÄno in place of attho. This confirms that attha here refers to the āsubstanceā or āmain matterā of the text (rather than the āmeaningā). In other words, this indicates the portion that was spoken by the Buddha, specifically the preceding verses.
Paį¹hamaį¹.
