Pasādabahulabrāhmaṇavatthu
Chinda sotaṁ parakkamma, Cut the stream, striving! Cut the stream,
kāme panuda brāhmaṇa; Cast aside sensual pleasures, brahmin. try to dispel sensuality, brahmin.
Saṅkhārānaṁ khayaṁ ñatvā, Knowing the ending of conditions, Having known the elimination of all things,
akataññūsi brāhmaṇa. know the uncreated, brahmin. you will know the Unmade, brahmin.
Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu
Yadā dvayesu dhammesu, When a brahmin has gone beyond When a brahmin
pāragū hoti brāhmaṇo; dualistic phenomena, goes beyond duality,
Athassa sabbe saṁyogā, then they consciously then all fetters come to an end
atthaṁ gacchanti jānato. make an end of all fetters. for the one who knows.
Māravatthu
Yassa pāraṁ apāraṁ vā, One for whom there is no crossing over One for whom the beyond, the not-beyond,
pārāpāraṁ na vijjati; or crossing back, or crossing over and back; and both beyond and not beyond cannot be found,
Vītaddaraṁ visaṁyuttaṁ, stress-free, detached, without anxiety, unattached -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Aññatarabrāhmaṇavatthu
Jhāyiṁ virajamāsīnaṁ, Absorbed, rid of hopes, Sitting dispassionately in meditation,
katakiccamanāsavaṁ; their task completed, without defilements, the task complete, free of defilements,
Uttamatthamanuppattaṁ, arrived at the highest goal: having reached the highest goal -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Ānandattheravatthu
Divā tapati ādicco, The sun blazes by day, The sun shines by day,
rattimābhāti candimā; the moon radiates at night, the moon illuminates the night,
Sannaddho khattiyo tapati, the aristocrat shines in armor, a well-dressed aristocrat shines,
jhāyī tapati brāhmaṇo; and the brahmin shines in absorption. a meditating brahmin shines,
Atha sabbamahorattiṁ, But all day and all night, and the one that shines both day and night
buddho tapati tejasā. the Buddha blazes with glory. is the Buddha, the Radiant One.
Aññatarabrāhmaṇapabbajitavatthu
Bāhitapāpoti brāhmaṇo, A brahmin’s so-called since they’ve banished evil, One who has expelled all evil is called a brahmin,
Samacariyā samaṇoti vuccati; an ascetic’s so-called since they live a serene life. one who lives peacefully is called a contemplative,
Pabbājayamattano malaṁ, One who has renounced all stains one who has personally exiled all their contaminants
Tasmā “pabbajito”ti vuccati. is said to be a “renunciant”. is called a renunciant.
Sāriputtattheravatthu
Na brāhmaṇassa pahareyya, One should never strike a brahmin, A brahmin would not attack another person,
nāssa muñcetha brāhmaṇo; nor should a brahmin retaliate. nor would a brahmin abandon one.
Dhī brāhmaṇassa hantāraṁ, Woe to the one who hurts a brahmin, Woe comes to one who attacks a brahmin,
tato dhī yassa muñcati. and woe for the one who retaliates. woe comes to one who abandons a brahmin.
Na brāhmaṇassetadakiñci seyyo, Nothing is better for a brahmin There is nothing better than this for a brahmin:
Yadā nisedho manaso piyehi; than to hold their mind back from attachment. when the mind is kept away from its preferences.
Yato yato hiṁsamano nivattati, From wherever a cruel wish recoils, Whenever one turns away from causing harm,
Tato tato sammatimeva dukkhaṁ. right there suffering subsides. then suffering is replaced by peace.
Mahāpajāpatigotamīvatthu
Yassa kāyena vācāya, Who does nothing wrong One who does no misconduct
manasā natthi dukkaṭaṁ; by body, speech or mind, with body, speech, or mind,
Saṁvutaṁ tīhi ṭhānehi, restrained in these three respects, one who is restrained in these three ways -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Sāriputtattheravatthu
Yamhā dhammaṁ vijāneyya, You should graciously honor If someone has helped you understand the Dhamma
sammāsambuddhadesitaṁ; the one from whom you learn the Dhamma taught by the fully awakened one,
Sakkaccaṁ taṁ namasseyya, taught by the awakened Buddha, then you should respectfully venerate them,
aggihuttaṁva brāhmaṇo. as a brahmin honors the sacred flame. like a brahmin at a fire-sacrifice.
Jaṭilabrāhmaṇavatthu
Na jaṭāhi na gottena, Not by matted hair or family, It is not because of tangled hair, lineage,
na jaccā hoti brāhmaṇo; or birth is one a brahmin. or birth that one is a brahmin.
Yamhi saccañca dhammo ca, Those who are truthful and principled: One in whom there is truth, Dhamma,
so sucī so ca brāhmaṇo. they are pure, they are brahmins. and purity is a brahmin.
Kuhakabrāhmaṇavatthu
Kiṁ te jaṭāhi dummedha, Why the matted hair, you simpleton, Fool, what does tangled hair do for you?
kiṁ te ajinasāṭiyā; and why the skin of deer? What does a goatskin robe do for you?
Abbhantaraṁ te gahanaṁ, The tangle is inside you, Inside you there is a jungle;
bāhiraṁ parimajjasi. yet you polish up your outsides. you only polish the outside.
Kisāgotamīvatthu
Paṁsukūladharaṁ jantuṁ, A personage who wears robes of rags, A person wearing rag-robes,
kisaṁ dhamanisanthataṁ; lean, their limbs showing veins, lean, with protruding veins,
Ekaṁ vanasmiṁ jhāyantaṁ, meditating alone in the forest, meditating alone in the forest -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Ekabrāhmaṇavatthu
Na cāhaṁ brāhmaṇaṁ brūmi, I don’t call someone a brahmin I do not say that one is a brahmin
yonijaṁ mattisambhavaṁ; after the mother’s womb they’re born from. because of the womb they were born from or the mother that produced them;
Bhovādi nāma so hoti, If they still have attachments,
sace hoti sakiñcano; they’re just someone who says “worthy”. if they are possessive;
Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ, Having nothing, taking nothing: but one who is not possessive and not acquisitive -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Uggasenaseṭṭhiputtavatthu
Sabbasaṁyojanaṁ chetvā, Having cut off all fetters One who has cut all fetters
yo ve na paritassati; they have no anxiety. and is not agitated,
Saṅgātigaṁ visaṁyuttaṁ, They’ve slipped their chains and are detached: who has transcended all bonds and is unattached -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Dvebrāhmaṇavatthu
Chetvā naddhiṁ varattañca, They’ve cut the strap and harness, Having cut the thong and strap,
sandānaṁ sahanukkamaṁ; the halter and bridle too, having broken every link of the chain,
Ukkhittapalighaṁ buddhaṁ, with cross-bar lifted, they’re awakened: one who has removed the barricade and is awakened -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Akkosakabhāradvājavatthu
Akkosaṁ vadhabandhañca, Abuse, killing, caging: Insult, attack, imprisonment -
aduṭṭho yo titikkhati; they withstand these without anger. one who endures these without getting upset,
Khantībalaṁ balānīkaṁ, Patience is their powerful army: with patience as strong as an army -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Sāriputtattheravatthu
Akkodhanaṁ vatavantaṁ, Not irritable or pretentious, Free from anger, religious,
sīlavantaṁ anussadaṁ; dutiful in precepts and observances, virtuous, humble,
Dantaṁ antimasārīraṁ, tamed, bearing their final body: trained, bearing their final body -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Uppalavaṇṇāttherīvatthu
Vāri pokkharapatteva, Like water from a lotus leaf, Like water on a lotus leaf,
āraggeriva sāsapo; like a mustard seed off a pin-point, like a mustard seed on a needle tip,
Yo na limpati kāmesu, sensual pleasures slip off them: one to whom sensuality does not stick -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Aññatarabrāhmaṇavatthu
Yo dukkhassa pajānāti, They understand for themselves One who understands suffering
idheva khayamattano; the end of suffering in this life; and has personally eliminated it here and now,
Pannabhāraṁ visaṁyuttaṁ, with burden put down, detached: who has set down the burden, unattached -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Khemābhikkhunīvatthu
Gambhīrapaññaṁ medhāviṁ, Deep in wisdom, intelligent, One who has profound wisdom and intelligence,
maggāmaggassa kovidaṁ; expert in the path and what is not the path; expert in what is and is not the path,
Uttamatthamanuppattaṁ, arrived at the highest goal: who has attained the highest goal -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Pabbhāravāsitissattheravatthu
Asaṁsaṭṭhaṁ gahaṭṭhehi, Mixing with neither Not involved with laypeople
anāgārehi cūbhayaṁ; householders nor the homeless; or with monks,
Anokasārimappicchaṁ, a migrant with no bastion, few in wishes: a homeless wanderer with few wishes -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Aññatarabhikkhuvatthu
Nidhāya daṇḍaṁ bhūtesu, They’ve laid aside violence One who has renounced violence towards living beings,
tasesu thāvaresu ca; against creatures firm and frail; whether weak or strong,
Yo na hanti na ghāteti, not killing or making others kill: who does not injure or kill -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Sāmaṇerānaṁvatthu
Aviruddhaṁ viruddhesu, Not fighting among those who fight, One who is unhindered amidst the hindered,
attadaṇḍesu nibbutaṁ; quenched among those who have taken up arms, self-disciplined, cooled,
Sādānesu anādānaṁ, not grasping among those who grasp: not acquisitive amidst the acquisitive -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Mahāpanthakattheravatthu
Yassa rāgo ca doso ca, They’ve discarded greed and hate, One from whom passion, hatred,
māno makkho ca pātito; along with conceit and contempt, conceit, and contempt have fallen away,
Sāsaporiva āraggā, like a mustard seed off the point of a pin: like mustard seeds from a needle tip -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Pilindavacchattheravatthu
Akakkasaṁ viññāpaniṁ, The words they utter One who speaks words that are gentle, instructive,
giraṁ saccamudīraye; are polished, informative, and true, and true,
Yāya nābhisaje kañci, and don’t offend anyone: and that do not create attachment to anything -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Aññatarattheravatthu
Yodha dīghaṁ va rassaṁ vā, They don’t steal anything in the world, One who steals nothing in the world -
aṇuṁ thūlaṁ subhāsubhaṁ; long or short, whether it is long or short, small or large,
Loke adinnaṁ nādiyati, fine or coarse, beautiful or ugly: beautiful or ugly -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.

Āsā yassa na vijjanti, They have no hope One in whom no longing can be found,
asmiṁ loke paramhi ca; in this world or the next; for this world or the next,
Nirāsāsaṁ visaṁyuttaṁ, with no need for hope, detached: free of longing, unattached -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Mahāmoggallānattheravatthu
Yassālayā na vijjanti, They have no clinging, One in whom no adherence can be found,
aññāya akathaṅkathī; knowledge has freed them of indecision, who has overcome confusion through direct knowledge,
Amatogadhamanuppattaṁ, they’ve arrived at the objective, freedom from death: who has reached immersion in the deathless -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Revatattheravatthu
Yodha puññañca pāpañca, They’ve escaped clinging One who has transcended
ubho saṅgamupaccagā; to both good and bad deeds; attachment to both merit and evil,
Asokaṁ virajaṁ suddhaṁ, sorrowless, stainless, pure: sorrowless, immaculate, and pure -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Candābhattheravatthu
Candaṁva vimalaṁ suddhaṁ, Pure as the spotless moon, One who, like the moon, is stainless, pure,
vippasannamanāvilaṁ; clear and undisturbed, clear, and undisturbed;
Nandībhavaparikkhīṇaṁ, they’ve ended relish for rebirth: one who has completely eliminated delight in existence -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Sīvalittheravatthu
Yomaṁ palipathaṁ duggaṁ, They’ve got past this grueling swamp This dangerous, difficult path,
saṁsāraṁ mohamaccagā; of delusion, transmigration. Saṁsāra, delusion -
Tiṇṇo pāraṅgato jhāyī, Meditating in stillness, free of indecision, a meditator who has transcended it, crossed over it, gone beyond it,
anejo akathaṅkathī; they have crossed over to the far shore. who is unmoved, unconfused,
Anupādāya nibbuto, They’re quenched by not grasping: and enlightened through non-grasping -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Sundarasamuddattheravatthu
Yodha kāme pahantvāna, They’ve given up sensual stimulations, One who has abandoned sensuality,
anāgāro paribbaje; and have gone forth from lay life; who wanders without a home,
Kāmabhavaparikkhīṇaṁ, they’ve ended rebirth in the sensual realm: who has completely eliminated sensual existence -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Jaṭilattheravatthu
Yodha taṇhaṁ pahantvāna, They’ve given up craving, One who has abandoned craving,
anāgāro paribbaje; and have gone forth from lay life; who wanders without a home,
Taṇhābhavaparikkhīṇaṁ, they’ve ended craving to be reborn: who has completely eliminated craving for existence -

Sabbayogavisaṁyuttaṁ, unyoked from all yokes: one who is not attached to anything -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Naṭaputtakattheravatthu
Hitvā ratiñca aratiñca, Giving up desire and discontent, Having relinquished liking and disliking,
sītibhūtaṁ nirūpadhiṁ; they’re cooled and free of attachments; serene and non-possessive,
Sabbalokābhibhuṁ vīraṁ, a hero, master of the whole world: a hero who has overcome the entire world -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Vaṅgīsattheravatthu
Cutiṁ yo vedi sattānaṁ, They know the passing away One who completely understands
upapattiñca sabbaso; and rebirth of all beings; the death and rebirth of sentient beings,
Asattaṁ sugataṁ buddhaṁ, unattached, holy, awakened: unattached, heavenly, awake -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Yassa gatiṁ na jānanti, Gods, centaurs, and humans One whose destiny is not known
devā gandhabbamānusā; don’t know their destiny; by any angel, spirit, or human,
Khīṇāsavaṁ arahantaṁ, the perfected ones with defilements ended: an Arahant whose corruptions have been eliminated -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Dhammadinnāttherīvatthu
Yassa pure ca pacchā ca, They have nothing before or after, One who has nothing before, after,
majjhe ca natthi kiñcanaṁ; or even in between. or in the middle;
Akiñcanaṁ anādānaṁ, Having nothing, taking nothing: one who is not possessive and not acquisitive -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Aṅgulimālattheravatthu
Usabhaṁ pavaraṁ vīraṁ, Captain of the herd, excellent hero, A bull, an excellent hero,
mahesiṁ vijitāvinaṁ; great seer and victor; a great sage, a victor,
Anejaṁ nhātakaṁ buddhaṁ, unstirred, washed, awakened: unmoved, cleansed, awake -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Devahitabrāhmaṇavatthu
Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedi, One who knows their past lives, One who knows their past lives,
saggāpāyañca passati; sees heaven and places of loss, who sees heaven and hell,
Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto, and has attained the end of rebirth; who has reached the elimination of birth,
abhiññāvosito muni; a sage of perfect insight a sage who has mastery of higher knowledge,
Sabbavositavosānaṁ, at the summit of spiritual perfection: who has mastered every attainment -
tamahaṁ brūmi brāhmaṇaṁ. that’s who I declare a brahmin. that is who I call a brahmin.
Brāhmaṇavaggo chabbīsatimo.
Ettāvatā sabbapaṭhame yamakavagge cuddasa vatthūni, appamādavagge nava, cittavagge nava, pupphavagge dvādasa, bālavagge pannarasa, paṇḍitavagge ekādasa, arahantavagge dasa, sahassavagge cuddasa, pāpavagge dvādasa, daṇḍavagge ekādasa, jarāvagge nava, attavagge dasa, lokavagge ekādasa, buddhavagge nava, sukhavagge aṭṭha, piyavagge nava, kodhavagge aṭṭha, malavagge dvādasa, dhammaṭṭhavagge dasa, maggavagge dvādasa, pakiṇṇakavagge nava, nirayavagge nava, nāgavagge aṭṭha, taṇhāvagge dvādasa, bhikkhuvagge dvādasa, brāhmaṇavagge cattālīsāti pañcādhikāni tīṇi vatthusatāni.
Satevīsacatussatā,
catusaccavibhāvinā;
Satattayañca vatthūnaṁ,
pañcādhikaṁ samuṭṭhitāti.
Dhammapade vaggānamuddānaṁ
Yamakappamādo cittaṁ,
pupphaṁ bālena paṇḍito;
Arahanto sahassañca,
pāpaṁ daṇḍena te dasa.
Jarā attā ca loko ca,
buddho sukhaṁ piyena ca;
Kodho malañca dhammaṭṭho,
maggavaggena vīsati.
Pakiṇṇaṁ nirayo nāgo,
taṇhā bhikkhu ca brāhmaṇo;
Ete chabbīsati vaggā,
desitādiccabandhunā.
Gāthānamuddānaṁ
Yamake vīsati gāthā,
appamādamhi dvādasa;
Ekādasa cittavagge,
pupphavaggamhi soḷasa.
Bāle ca soḷasa gāthā,
paṇḍitamhi catuddasa;
Arahante dasa gāthā,
sahasse honti soḷasa.
Terasa pāpavaggamhi,
daṇḍamhi dasa satta ca;
Ekādasa jarā vagge,
attavaggamhi tā dasa.
Dvādasa lokavaggamhi,
buddhavaggamhi ṭhārasa;
Sukhe ca piyavagge ca,
gāthāyo honti dvādasa.
Cuddasa kodhavaggamhi,
malavaggekavīsati;
Sattarasa ca dhammaṭṭhe,
maggavagge sattarasa.
Pakiṇṇe soḷasa gāthā,
niraye nāge ca cuddasa;
Chabbīsa taṇhāvaggamhi,
tevīsa bhikkhuvaggikā.
Ekatālīsagāthāyo,
brāhmaṇe vaggamuttame;
Gāthāsatāni cattāri,
tevīsa ca punāpare;
Dhammapade nipātamhi,
desitādiccabandhunāti.
