Nirayavagga The Hell Chapter 22. Hell

Sundarīparibbājikāvatthu

Abhūtavādī nirayaṁ upeti, Those who proclaim what never happened go to hell, A liar goes to hell,

Yo vāpi katvā na karomi cāha; as well as those who do something then say they did not. as does one who denies what they did.

Ubhopi te pecca samā bhavanti, After death, both are the same; Both are equal in the hereafter,

Nihīnakammā manujā parattha. people whose afterlife was determined by lowly actions. those men of base deeds.

Duccaritaphalapīḷitavatthu

Kāsāvakaṇṭhā bahavo, Many who wear ochre on their neck Many who wear a scrap of ocher cloth

pāpadhammā asaññatā; are evil and unrestrained. are unrestrained and wicked.

Pāpā pāpehi kammehi, Because of their evil actions Being wicked, they are reborn in hell

nirayaṁ te upapajjare. they are reborn in hell. due to their bad deeds.

Vaggumudātīriyabhikkhuvatthu

Seyyo ayoguḷo bhutto, It is better to eat a red-hot iron ball, It’d be better for the immoral and unrestrained

tatto aggisikhūpamo; glowing like fire, to eat an iron ball,

Yañce bhuñjeyya dussīlo, than for an immoral, unrestrained person scorching, like a burning flame,

raṭṭhapiṇḍamasaññato. to eat the nation’s almsfood. than to eat the nation’s alms.

Khemakaseṭṭhiputtavatthu

Cattāri ṭhānāni naro pamatto, Four things happen to a negligent person Four things befall a heedless man

Āpajjati paradārūpasevī; who commits adultery: who sleeps with another’s wife:

Apuññalābhaṁ na nikāmaseyyaṁ, bad karma, insomnia, wickedness, poor sleep,

Nindaṁ tatīyaṁ nirayaṁ catutthaṁ. criticism, and rebirth in hell. ill-repute, and rebirth in hell.

Apuññalābho ca gatī ca pāpikā, One acquires bad karma and the destiny of evil people, He accrues wickedness and is reborn in a bad place,

Bhītassa bhītāya ratī ca thokikā; and only the minute pleasure of a frightened man with a frightened woman; all so a frightened couple may snatch a moment’s pleasure,

Rājā ca daṇḍaṁ garukaṁ paṇeti, and then the king enacts a severe punishment. for which rulers impose a heavy punishment.

Tasmā naro paradāraṁ na seve. Therefore, one should not commit adultery. That’s why a man should not sleep with another’s wife.

Dubbacabhikkhuvatthu

Kuso yathā duggahito, Just as a blade, when poorly held, When kusa grass is wrongly grasped

hatthamevānukantati; cuts the hand that holds it, it only cuts the hand.

Sāmaññaṁ dupparāmaṭṭhaṁ, a contemplative life that is held incorrectly So too, the ascetic life, when wrongly taken,

nirayāyupakaḍḍhati. draws one closer to hell. drags you to hell.

Yaṁ kiñci sithilaṁ kammaṁ, Lax behavior, Any lax act,

saṅkiliṭṭhañca yaṁ vataṁ; defiled practice, any corrupt observance,

Saṅkassaraṁ brahmacariyaṁ, a suspicious spiritual life - or suspicious spiritual life,

na taṁ hoti mahapphalaṁ. this does not bring great benefit. is not very fruitful.

Kayirā ce kayirāthenaṁ, If one will do what one should do, If one is to do what should be done,

daḷhamenaṁ parakkame; then one should make a solid effort, one should staunchly strive.

Sithilo hi paribbājo, because a lax renunciant For the life gone forth when laxly led

bhiyyo ākirate rajaṁ. scatters more dust. just stirs up dust all the more.

Issāpakataitthivatthu

Akataṁ dukkaṭaṁ seyyo, It is better when misconduct is not done; A bad deed is better left undone,

pacchā tappati dukkaṭaṁ; misconduct torments afterwards. for it will plague you later on.

Katañca sukataṁ seyyo, It is better when good conduct is done; A good deed is better done,

yaṁ katvā nānutappati. after doing so, one is not tormented. one that does not plague you.

Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu

Nagaraṁ yathā paccantaṁ, As a border city As a frontier city

guttaṁ santarabāhiraṁ; is guarded inside and out, is guarded inside and out,

Evaṁ gopetha attānaṁ, in the same way guard yourself; so you should ward yourselves—

khaṇo vo mā upaccagā; let not a moment slip past you. don’t let the moment pass you by.

Khaṇātītā hi socanti, When the moment is past they sorrow, For if you miss your moment

nirayamhi samappitā. those who arrived in hell. you’ll grieve when sent to hell.

Nigaṇṭhavatthu

Alajjitāye lajjanti, They are ashamed when they should not be ashamed, Unashamed of what is shameful,

lajjitāye na lajjare; they are not ashamed when they should be ashamed; ashamed of what is not shameful;

Micchādiṭṭhisamādānā, taking up wrong view, beings who uphold wrong view

sattā gacchanti duggatiṁ. beings go to a bad destination. go to a bad place.

Abhaye bhayadassino, They see danger where there is no danger, Seeing danger where there is none,

bhaye cābhayadassino; they see no danger where there is danger; and blind to the actual danger,

Micchādiṭṭhisamādānā, taking up wrong view, beings who uphold wrong view

sattā gacchanti duggatiṁ. beings go to a bad destination. go to a bad place.

Titthiyasāvakavatthu

Avajje vajjamatino, They think the blameless is blameworthy, Seeing fault where there is none,

vajje cāvajjadassino; and see the blameworthy as blameless; and blind to the actual fault,

Micchādiṭṭhisamādānā, taking up wrong view, beings who uphold wrong view

sattā gacchanti duggatiṁ. beings go to a bad destination. go to a bad place.

Vajjañca vajjato ñatvā, Knowing the blameworthy as blameworthy Knowing a fault as a fault

avajjañca avajjato; and the blameless as blameless, and the faultless as faultless,

Sammādiṭṭhisamādānā, taking up right view, beings who uphold right view

sattā gacchanti suggatiṁ. beings go to a good destination. go to a good place.

Nirayavaggo dvāvīsatimo.
