Attanopubbakammavatthu
Mattāsukhapariccāgā, If by relinquishing limited happiness If by giving up material happiness
passe ce vipulaṁ sukhaṁ; one can see abundant happiness, one sees abundant happiness,
Caje mattāsukhaṁ dhīro, then one who is wise relinquishes limited happiness the attentive would give up material happiness,
sampassaṁ vipulaṁ sukhaṁ. and sees abundant happiness. seeing the abundant happiness.
Kukkuṭaṇḍakhādikāvatthu
Paradukkhūpadhānena, By profiting from the suffering of others, Seeking their own happiness
attano sukhamicchati; one seeks happiness for oneself; by imposing suffering on others,
Verasaṁsaggasaṁsaṭṭho, one who is intimately involved in hostility living intimate with enmity,
verā so na parimuccati. is not free from hostility. they’re not freed from enmity.
Bhaddiyānaṁbhikkhūnaṁvatthu
Yañhi kiccaṁ apaviddhaṁ, They reject what should be done They dump what should be done,
akiccaṁ pana karīyati; and do what should not be done; and do what should not be done.
Unnaḷānaṁ pamattānaṁ, arrogant and negligent, For the insolent and the negligent,
tesaṁ vaḍḍhanti āsavā. their defilements increase. their defilements only grow.
Yesañca susamāraddhā, They have undertaken Those that have properly undertaken
niccaṁ kāyagatā sati; continuous mindfulness of the body, constant mindfulness of the body,
Akiccaṁ te na sevanti, they do not do what should not be done, don’t cultivate what should not be done,
kicce sātaccakārino; and they always do what should be done; but always do what should be done.
Satānaṁ sampajānānaṁ, mindful and aware, Mindful and aware,
atthaṁ gacchanti āsavā. their defilements disappear. their defilements come to an end.
Lakuṇḍakabhaddiyavatthu
Mātaraṁ pitaraṁ hantvā, Having slain mother and father, Having slain mother and father,
rājāno dve ca khattiye; two royal kings, and two aristocratic kings,
Raṭṭhaṁ sānucaraṁ hantvā, and a kingdom with its followers, and having wiped out the kingdom with its tax collector,
anīgho yāti brāhmaṇo. the brahmin proceeds untroubled. the brahmin walks on untroubled.
Mātaraṁ pitaraṁ hantvā, Having slain mother and father, Having slain mother and father,
rājāno dve ca sotthiye; two scholar kings, and two prosperous kings,
Veyagghapañcamaṁ hantvā, and a tiger as well, and a tiger as the fifth,
anīgho yāti brāhmaṇo. the brahmin proceeds untroubled. the brahmin walks on untroubled.
Dārusākaṭikaputtavatthu
Suppabuddhaṁ pabujjhanti, They always wake up well, The disciples of Gotama
sadā gotamasāvakā; the disciples of Gotama always wake up refreshed,
Yesaṁ divā ca ratto ca, who continuously recollect the Buddha who day and night
niccaṁ buddhagatā sati. by day and by night. constantly recollect the Buddha.
Suppabuddhaṁ pabujjhanti, They always wake up well, The disciples of Gotama
sadā gotamasāvakā; disciples of the Buddha always wake up refreshed,
Yesaṁ divā ca ratto ca, who continuously recollect the Dhamma who day and night
niccaṁ dhammagatā sati. by day and by night. constantly recollect the teaching.
Suppabuddhaṁ pabujjhanti, They always wake up well, The disciples of Gotama
sadā gotamasāvakā; the disciples of Gotama always wake up refreshed,
Yesaṁ divā ca ratto ca, who continuously recollect the Saṅgha who day and night
niccaṁ saṅghagatā sati. by day and by night. constantly recollect the Saṅgha.
Suppabuddhaṁ pabujjhanti, They always wake up well, The disciples of Gotama
sadā gotamasāvakā; the disciples of Gotama always wake up refreshed,
Yesaṁ divā ca ratto ca, who continuously practice mindfulness of the body who day and night
niccaṁ kāyagatā sati. by day and by night. are constantly mindful of the body.
Suppabuddhaṁ pabujjhanti, They always wake up well, The disciples of Gotama
sadā gotamasāvakā; the disciples of Gotama always wake up refreshed,
Yesaṁ divā ca ratto ca, who approve of harmlessness whose minds day and night
ahiṁsāya rato mano. by day and by night. delight in harmlessness.
Suppabuddhaṁ pabujjhanti, They always wake up well, The disciples of Gotama
sadā gotamasāvakā; the disciples of Gotama always wake up refreshed,
Yesaṁ divā ca ratto ca, who approve of self-development whose minds day and night
bhāvanāya rato mano. by day and by night. delight in meditation.
Vajjiputtakabhikkhuvatthu
Duppabbajjaṁ durabhiramaṁ, The renunciant life is difficult and hard to enjoy; Going forth is hard, it’s hard to be happy;
Durāvāsā gharā dukhā; the household life is difficult and hard to endure. life at home is hard too, and painful,
Dukkhosamānasaṁvāso, Living with others is suffering, it’s painful to stay when you’ve nothing in common.
Dukkhānupatitaddhagū; and travelers also undergo suffering. A traveler is a prey to pain,
Tasmā na caddhagū siyā, Therefore, just as one can choose to not travel, so don’t be a traveler,
Na ca dukkhānupatito siyā. one can choose to not suffer. don’t be prey to pain.
Cittagahapativatthu
Saddho sīlena sampanno, One who has faith and morality, One who is faithful, accomplished in ethics,
yasobhogasamappito; influence and wealth, blessed with fame and wealth,
Yaṁ yaṁ padesaṁ bhajati, is honored is honored in whatever place
tattha tattheva pūjito. wherever they are. they frequent.
Cūḷasubhaddāvatthu
Dūre santo pakāsenti, Those who are good are visible from afar, The good shine from afar,
himavantova pabbato; like a Himalayan mountain; like the Himalayan peaks,
Asantettha na dissanti, but those who are not good cannot be seen, but the wicked are not seen,
rattiṁ khittā yathā sarā. like arrows loosed at night. like arrows scattered in the night.
Ekavihārittheravatthu
Ekāsanaṁ ekaseyyaṁ, Sitting alone, sleeping alone, Sitting alone, sleeping alone,
eko caramatandito; going alone, never lazy; tirelessly wandering alone;
Eko damayamattānaṁ, training oneself alone, one who tames themselves alone
vanante ramito siyā. one can enjoy the forest. would delight within a forest.
Pakiṇṇakavaggo ekavīsatimo.
