Maggavagga The Path Chapter 20. The Path
Pañcasatabhikkhuvatthu
Maggānaṭṭhaṅgiko seṭṭho, The best of paths is the Eightfold; Of paths, the eightfold is the best;
saccānaṁ caturo padā; of truths, the one in four steps. of truths, the four statements;
Virāgo seṭṭho dhammānaṁ, The best of qualities is dispassion; dispassion is the best of things,
dvipadānañca cakkhumā. of bipeds, the one who sees. and the Clear-eyed One is the best of humans.
Eseva maggo natthañño, This is the path - there is no other - This is the path, there is no other
Dassanassa visuddhiyā; for obtaining vision and purity. for the purification of vision.
Etañhi tumhe paṭipajjatha, Therefore, follow this path You all must practice this,
Mārassetaṁ pamohanaṁ. which confuses Māra. it is the way to baffle Māra.
Etañhi tumhe paṭipannā, When you have followed this path When you all are practicing this,
dukkhassantaṁ karissatha; you will end suffering. you will make an end of suffering.
Akkhāto vo mayā maggo, I have explained the path for you; I have explained the path to you
aññāya sallakantanaṁ. by means of knowledge the sting is eased. for extracting the thorn with wisdom.
Tumhehi kiccamātappaṁ, It is by you that the effort must be made; You yourselves must do the work,
akkhātāro tathāgatā; the Truth-Finders just explain. the Realized Ones just show the way.
Paṭipannā pamokkhanti, Those who have followed the path become free Meditators practicing absorption
jhāyino mārabandhanā. from the bonds of Māra. are released from Māra’s bonds.
Aniccalakkhaṇavatthu
“Sabbe saṅkhārā aniccā”ti, Everything is impermanent - All conditions are impermanent—
yadā paññāya passati; when one sees this with wisdom, when this is seen with wisdom,
Atha nibbindati dukkhe, one becomes disenchanted with suffering; one grows disillusioned with suffering:
esa maggo visuddhiyā. this is the path to purity. this is the path to purity.
Dukkhalakkhaṇavatthu
“Sabbe saṅkhārā dukkhā”ti, Everything is unsatisfying - All conditions are suffering—
yadā paññāya passati; when one sees this with wisdom when this is seen with wisdom,
Atha nibbindati dukkhe, one becomes disenchanted with suffering; one grows disillusioned with suffering:
esa maggo visuddhiyā. this is the path to purity. this is the path to purity.
Anattalakkhaṇavatthu
“Sabbe dhammā anattā”ti, Everything is impersonal - All things are not-self—
yadā paññāya passati; when one sees this with wisdom, when this is seen with wisdom,
Atha nibbindati dukkhe, one becomes disenchanted with suffering; one grows disillusioned with suffering:
esa maggo visuddhiyā. this is the path to purity. this is the path to purity.
Padhānakammikatissattheravatthu
Uṭṭhānakālamhi anuṭṭhahāno, Not rising to the occasion when it is time to do so, They don’t get going when it’s time to start;
Yuvā balī ālasiyaṁ upeto; young and strong, but indolent, they’re young and strong, but given to sloth.
Saṁsannasaṅkappamano kusīto, aimless, and lazy, Their mind depressed in sunken thought,
Paññāya maggaṁ alaso na vindati. the indolent one does not find the path of wisdom. lazy and slothful, they can’t discern the path.
Sūkarapetavatthu
Vācānurakkhī manasā susaṁvuto, With speech controlled and mind well-restrained, Guarded in speech, restrained in mind,
Kāyena ca nākusalaṁ kayirā; and doing nothing harmful with the body, doing no unskillful bodily deed.
Ete tayo kammapathe visodhaye, purify these three paths of karma Purify these three ways of performing deeds,
Ārādhaye maggamisippaveditaṁ. and accomplish the path demonstrated by the seer. and win the path known to seers.
Poṭṭhilattheravatthu
Yogā ve jāyatī bhūri, Commitment produces abundance, From meditation springs wisdom,
ayogā bhūrisaṅkhayo; a lack of commitment completely eliminates it. without meditation, wisdom ends.
Etaṁ dvedhāpathaṁ ñatvā, Knowing these two paths Knowing these two paths—
bhavāya vibhavāya ca; which lead to existence and non-existence, of progress and decline—
Tathāttānaṁ niveseyya, one should settle oneself accordingly you should conduct yourself
yathā bhūri pavaḍḍhati. and cultivate abundance. so that wisdom grows.
Pañcamahallakabhikkhuvatthu
Vanaṁ chindatha mā rukkhaṁ, Cut down the forest, not the tree; Cut down the jungle, not just a tree;
vanato jāyate bhayaṁ; the forest produces danger. from the jungle springs fear.
Chetvā vanañca vanathañca, When you have cut down the forest and its undergrowth, Having cut down jungle and snarl,
nibbanā hotha bhikkhavo. you will have no forest, monks. be free of jungles, mendicants!
Yāva hi vanatho na chijjati, As long as the undergrowth has not been cut down, So long as the vine, no matter how small,
Aṇumattopi narassa nārisu; even if only a tiny amount is left, then whether one is a man or a woman that ties a man to women is not cut,
Paṭibaddhamanova tāva so, one will be bound to it, his mind remains trapped,
Vaccho khīrapakova mātari. like a calf sucking milk from its mother. like a calf suckling its mother.
Suvaṇṇakārattheravatthu
Ucchinda sinehamattano, Cut off self-cherishing, Cut out affection for oneself,
Kumudaṁ sāradikaṁva pāṇinā; like plucking a lotus in autumn. like plucking an autumn lotus.
Santimaggameva brūhaya, Practice the peaceful path to Nibbāna Foster only the path to peace,
Nibbānaṁ sugatena desitaṁ. as taught by the Heavenly One. the extinguishment the Holy One taught.
Mahādhanavāṇijavatthu
Idha vassaṁ vasissāmi, “Here I will spend the rainy season, “Here I will stay for the rains;
idha hemantagimhisu; here the winter, here the summer.” here for winter, here the summer”;
Iti bālo vicinteti, This is how a fool thinks, thus the fool thinks,
antarāyaṁ na bujjhati. not aware of the obstacle. not realizing the danger.
Kisāgotamīvatthu
Taṁ puttapasusammattaṁ, Intoxicated with children and cattle, As a mighty flood sweeps away a sleeping village,
byāsattamanasaṁ naraṁ; a person with mind attached; death steals away a man
Suttaṁ gāmaṁ mahoghova, like a great flood sweeping away a sleeping village, who dotes on children and cattle,
maccu ādāya gacchati. such a person is swept away by death. his mind caught up in them.
Paṭācārāvatthu
Na santi puttā tāṇāya, There is no safety in children, Children provide you no shelter,
na pitā nāpi bandhavā; parents, or kin; nor does father, nor relatives.
Antakenādhipannassa, when one is seized by the Ender, When you’re seized by the terminator,
natthi ñātīsu tāṇatā. there is no safety in relatives. there’s no shelter in family.
Etamatthavasaṁ ñatvā, Having understood this issue, Knowing the reason for this,
paṇḍito sīlasaṁvuto; the wise person, moral and self-restrained, astute, and ethically restrained,
Nibbānagamanaṁ maggaṁ, quickly purifies the path one would quickly clear the path
khippameva visodhaye. that leads to Nibbāna. that leads to extinguishment.
